Maiden Ginetta Junior victory for Harry King at Snetterton

Rising star Harry King produced his most impressive performance to date in the Simpson Race Products Ginetta Junior Championship with a maiden victory as the 2016 season resumed at Snetterton. The 15-year-old from Holyport in Berkshire went into the sixth meeting of the year looking to bounce back from a challenging outing at Croft prior to the summer break, where he had struggled to replicate the front-running pace displayed earlier in the year.Harry’s hopes of challenging for honours at the front of the field looked to be over before they had even started during Friday testing, with his car struggling for pace around the longest circuit on the schedule. The decision was taken to switch to a spare car for the race weekend itself, with his Elite Motorsport team ensuring the car was fully prepared and ready for free practice and qualifying on Saturday; where Harry rewarded them with an impressive third on the grid.Although he slipped back to fifth on the opening lap, Harry’s pace was clear to see as he secured a strong fourth place overall, adding another rookie podium finish to his name as the second best of the first year drivers. From fourth on the grid for race two, Harry fought his way into the lead on the opening lap only to then be shuffled back to fifth when he was forced wide; allowing the train behind to come through.Retaining his focus and getting his head down, Harry was soon back up into third place and when the two drivers ahead clashed at Agostini on the final lap, he made his move to cross the line in second place, keeping championship contender Will Tregurtha at bay.Having celebrated his podium finish, Harry was then given extra reason to cheer when a post-race penalty for on-the-road winner Dan Harper saw him promoted into first place, giving him his maiden victory and allowing him to move into the top ten in the championship standings.“It’s turned out to be a brilliant weekend, and it certainly wasn’t what I was expecting on Friday when we just didn’t have the pace to challenge,” he said. “Luckily the team was able to prepare the spare car for me for Saturday, and the fact I was up to speed straightaway showed it was right call from the team to change the car at that time.“The boys did a brilliant job to get it ready for practice and qualifying, so to put it P3 on the grid was great for them and meant I was in a good position for race one. I was happy with fourth place in the race as it was another rookie podium, and I knew we had the speed in the car to push for more in race two.“Getting into the lead early on was great and even after I then lost some places, I knew that I could fight back if I kept my focus. It was good to keep Will behind me as he has more experience as a second year driver going for the championship, and I was more than happy with second place at the finish.“Discovering that I’d been given the win afterwards was an unexpected bonus, and while it isn’t the way I want to take a victory, I’m certainly not going to turn it down. The points this weekend have been brilliant and are by far my best haul this season, so we’ve moved up the standings and it’s given me a fantastic boost in confidence for the rest of the season.”
