21 year old Simon Hughes will contest the Bulldog National Rally on October 23rd, as the youngster from Colwyn Bay seeks to build his experience of the 22 Motorsport run Subaru Impreza N9 he recently drove on the Trackrod Rally Yorkshire. After a very strong showing in Yorkshire, where Hughes was consistently on the pace of the leading Group N and Production Cup runners, the Welshman capped off his fine display with fastest time on one of the longer stages of the event - a full sixteen seconds up on his closest rival after a spirited display in the new car. With only limited prior Group N and four wheel drive experience under his belt, Hughes heads to the border town of Shrewsbury next for the Bulldog, final round of the ANCRO National Rally Championship - one of the most hotly contested rally championships in the UK. With forest roads on offer in Simon's native North Wales, the young Welshman will once again team up with Stranraer based Ulsterman Glenn Paterson for the 80 challenging stage miles on offer. The 22 Motorsport run Subaru Impreza will be well suited to the fast gravel roads, but Hughes will find plenty of rapid Group N opposition on the rally. The Bulldog is the final round of the popular Mitsubishi Evo Challenge, so Simon will battle with a host of the Lancer Evo's on the event. With Championship honours at stake, Hughes will find himself right in the middle of the action on the event, and is looking forward to testing himself against the best of the Evo runners:"The Evo Challenge is a strong series, and there are some very quick drivers in there, all with plenty of experience of their cars. For us its still a learning exercise in many ways, as Glenn and myself have only done one event together previously. Having said that, there's no reason why we cannot mix it with the leading Evo runners, as when they have featured on BRC rounds in the past, they have always shown a very strong pace. The likes of Paul Wedgebury and Rory Galligan are old rivals of mine from when I first started in the Peugeot 106 Cup, so it will be good to see how we all compare."Hughes is certainly finding his feet in the ex-Jenni Lee Hermansson Subaru, and has been hugely impressed by the attitude of the 22 Motorsport team so far. Hughes has spent most of the past two seasons in a Renault Clio Super 1600 car, and has found the Impreza N9 to be quite a different animal to the front wheel drive French machine:"22 Motorsport have made me feel really welcome since I first spoke to them before the Trackrod, and they are extremely professional about every aspect of the sport. I've also built a good working relationship with Jenni-Lee, as we have shared lots of information already on set up for the car. Its certainly a big difference from the Clio I have been driving. The corner and exit speeds are much higher with the extra grip, and you don't have to be quite so aggressive with the Subaru like you did with the Renault. I'm really enjoying driving something different at the moment and I hope we can put together a good showing on the Bulldog ahead of the Tempest."Hughes has entered the final round of the British Rally Championship in the Pirelli shod Subaru. The 22 Motorsport team will head south to Aldershot for the Tempest Stages Rally, the only round of the British Rally Championship held in the South of England. It will be the first time Hughes has contested the two day rally. Paterson will also co-drive on the event.
