Rival dashes Canamasas' race while running fourth

Canamasas suffered a heavy crash in GP2 Series´ race one at Monza when he was hit by Pic and pitched into a series of barrel rolls. Spain's Carlin driver escaped unhurt from his scary crash but it ruined chances after running fourth following an almost perfect first part of the race.

Canamasas lined up 17th for Carlin and only one lap into the race the Barcelona-born driver moved up to 12th. On his set of soft tires, Canamasas pitted for his mandatory pit stop on lap six. Putting everything, Canamasas had a nice pace and managed to undercut his rivals ahead and climbed into fourth after the pit stop window. Arthur Pic clashed with Canamasas at Lesmo 2 when the latter was running fourth behind Luca Ghiotto. It sent Canamasas´ Dallara into a barrel roll. Fortunately, he walked away uninjured but his race ended prematurely.

“We nearly grabbed a nice result. I knew it was possible. I made a good start and, after my mandatory pit stop, I couldn´t believe my engineer when he told me I was running fourth. It was crazy”, Canamasas said but underlining that “Pic tried to overtake me too quickly. I left him room for pass but he went into me and I pitched into a roll. I´m still sore after crash but it isn´t serious. My main concern is to find out if our chassis is damaged or not because it could kill my chances tomorrow as well. Carlin mechanics will work to repair the car on time.”

Sunday's sprint race takes place at 10.25.
