Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN will be racing on multiple fronts this weekend, as a team representative will be taking part in the legendary open-road regularity race, the 1000 Miglia, on the same weekend as the Canadian Grand Prix. Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN Managing Director, Alessandro Alunni Bravi, will be competing alongside Italian race driver and TV Host, Vicky Piria, on a classic Alfa Romeo 1900 Sport Spider (#342) that took part in the original event, with Alfa Romeo also fielding a 1928 6C 1500 Super Sport (#41) and a 1900 C Super Sprint Touring (#399).
Originally established in 1927, the 1000 Miglia took place on twenty-four occasions as an endurance race on a round-trip route from Brescia to Rome until 1957. Revived as a regularity event in 1977, it is now run with cars that competed in the first thirty years of the race.
Alfa Romeo claimed 11 triumphs as a car manufacturer, and its presence in this year’s edition, with three official crews, is a demonstration of how racing bridges the classic and modern era: despite the technology, the techniques and, of course, the vehicles, changing dramatically throughout history, the spirit and the passion of the competitors remain the same. Alfa Romeo’s 1000 Miglia spirit remains alive in today’s world, as exemplified by the two support vehicles for the three crews – the new Alfa Romeo Tonale C-SUV, the brand’s first electrified vehicle.
The route of this year’s 1000 Miglia, which will take place from Wednesday, June 15th to Saturday, June 18th, will start, as per tradition, in Brescia, with the first day ending in Milano Marittima on the east coast of Italy; the second day will see crews reach Rome, the farthest point down the peninsula the route will go to; day three will see the competitors drive up to Parma, before returning to Brescia on the final day.
Despite the focus on regularity rather than outright speed, this remains a gruelling event, totalling long days of driving over impressive distances. It’s a throwback to another era of racing, a call to times of yore when the competition was different.
