“If in doubt, flat out” wasn’t just Colin’s approach to rallies, it was to everything! – David Lapworth, Prodrive Technical Director
Subaru Impreza ‘L555 BAT’, arguably the most significant rally car in World Rally Championship history, will take centre stage at Shelsley Walsh’s Classic Nostalgia weekend on 19–20 July 2025. The event celebrates the golden era of rallying, with its trademark mix of iconic competition cars, non-stop entertainment, legendary drivers, and thrilling hill climb action.
Now in its 14th year, this flagship event will honour one of rallying’s greatest heroes, Colin McRae, and the 30th anniversary of his spectacular 1995 World Rally Championship title.
The legendary Subaru Impreza 555, which carried McRae to victory on the RAC Rally in 1995, will take centre stage in a poignant tribute, joined by other McRae-driven cars. A special startline photo call and demonstration runs will bring these machines roaring back to life with their unmistakable flat-four growl, as they run up the Shelsley Walsh track in Worcestershire.
One of the standout moments of the weekend will be a Q&A session featuring key members of Colin McRae’s original Prodrive team, sharing first-hand insights from the 1995 RAC Rally. Panellists will include Prodrive’s legendary engineer David Lapworth, Colin’s then-chief mechanic Alan McGuinness, mechanics Charlie Dodd, Nigel Riddle, Simon Cole, and motorsport commentator Mark James – the familiar voice of the BBC’s Rally Report during that era. Plus, anticipated appearances by McRae’s father, Jimmy McRae, and co-driver Derek Ringer too.
In 1995, Colin McRae etched his name into rallying history by becoming the youngest-ever World Rally Champion at the time. His flair and sheer flamboyant behind the wheel made his title victory into a global triumph not just for himself and his team, but for his legions of fans worldwide who were drawn to his swashbuckling spirit.
Known for his fearless style and unmatched skill, McRae’s championship win was a defining moment for the sport which brought rallying into the global spotlight. Over a million people watched the RAC Rally 1995 week that covered 28 stages and 1,130 miles in England, Wales and Scotland. His signature mantra: “If in doubt, flat out” encapsulated his daring philosophy.
David Richards CBE, Chairman and Founder of Prodrive said: “In the world of rallying, Colin stands out as one of those drivers’ people will never forget. His raw talent and total commitment endeared him to fans, and this lasts to this day”.
Thirty years on, McRae's influence remains as strong as ever. His iconic Subaru Impreza 555 is still revered as a masterpiece of engineering and a symbol of rallying excellence. We are honoured that the McRae family has granted permission for this historic car to be demonstrated at Classic Nostalgia.
Win a thrilling passenger ride in McRae’s N1 WRC
Fans can also witness the 1996 Rallye Catalunya-winning Subaru Impreza Group A, N1 WRC, driven by David Lapworth himself. It was the last rally Colin contested with co-driver Derek Ringer, the last Group A Impreza, and the victory secured Subaru’s second consecutive manufacturers’ World Rally Championship title. You could also win a passenger ride in this historic car alongside Prodrive’s Lapworth, with proceeds going to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, the event’s official charity partner.
Adding to the magic of the weekend is a packed programme of high-octane entertainment both on and off the hill. Crowd favourites Ralli22 returns to the hill, featuring Group B, Group A, and WRC cars all competing at one of the world’s oldest motorsport venues.
Expect thrilling hill climb competition, dramatic demonstrations from several Formula One cars in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the F1 World Championship, and over a dozen thunderous V8 NASCARS storming the hill that really caught the imagination of the fans on the hill in 2024 with their noise!
Visitors can also enjoy the ever-popular Classic & Sports Car Concours alongside The Art of Motorsport Gallery which will showcase vibrant new
Off the track, the excitement keeps rolling with live music, more than 20 visiting car clubs, and a breathtaking Spitfire flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (both days) capturing the unmistakable sound and spirit of wartime heroism above the historic Shelsley Walsh hill. Plus, representatives from the Royal Air Force regulars and reserves will have a stand on site to chat about careers and apprenticeship opportunities, offering a unique chance to engage with today’s RAF.
This year’s event promises to be truly unmissable, action-packed weekend of motor racing, nostalgia, noise and national pride
