Tour Britannia at The Rock

Rockingham seeks out Tour Britannia

Rockingham Motor Speedway - one of Britain’s newest and most impressive motor sport venues - will play host to Tour Britannia, the all-new race tour for drivers of historic cars (5-8 September 2005). The Northamptonshire venue is set to provide a wealth of atmosphere and action for the crews, who will not only enjoy challenging race facilities but warm hospitality in a blend of historic and modern surroundings.

“We were delighted to be approached by Rockingham and were absolutely amazed when we saw the stunning facilities available at this Northamptonshire venue,” said Fred Gallagher, Tour Britannia Sporting Director. “I’m sure all the competitors will love the circuit and we will also set up a great special stage to ensure even more action. The contrast between the 11th century historic castle and the state-of-the-art 21st century race facility is quite exceptional.”

Crews will arrive at Rockingham Castle for morning coffee on Tuesday 6 September - the second leg of Tour Britannia - taking in the ambience of this impressive royal fortress built by William the Conqueror. A sprint around Rockingham race circuit will then be followed by a race around the international circuit. With no fewer than 12 different track configurations, Rockingham provides an unrivalled variety of layouts and, working in conjunction with the circuit management, Tour Britannia has elected to use a 2.4 mile track configuration with crews timed over eight laps. Lunch in the luxury hospitality suites overlooking the circuit will also provide the opportunity to weigh up the competition.

“When we learnt about Tour Britannia we were determined to see the tour visit Rockingham, as it is just the type of event that should be at the country’s most impressive motor racing facility. It will be great to see some of the most famous sports cars ever built, such as Ford GT40s and Ferraris, taking on the Rock. Moreover, we see the Tour growing into one of the country’s top motor sport events over the next few years and we want Rockingham to share in that success,” said Joe Dickinson, Rockingham Chief Executive.

Tour Britannia, based in Stratford-upon-Avon, takes place between 5-8 September.
