Stage set for HGTCC opener at Oulton

The 2006 Heritage Grand Touring Car Challenge will roar into life during the F3/GT meeting at Oulton Park (Cheshire) over the Easter weekend (April 15/17).The HGTCC is one of the leading race series in Britain for sports, saloon and GT cars from the 1960s and 1970s and a 45-minute two-driver race on Easter Monday will provide a great start to the season. The class for the most powerful cars pits the best of the American V8 monsters against some very potent Aston Martins and Morgan Plus 8s. Chevrolet Camaros for former multiple BTCC champion Andy Rouse – sharing with Peter Hall as usual - Arthur Thurtle/Roger Bennington and Bill Withey top the field, while local veteran Alan Minshaw is bringing his monstrous Chevrolet Malibu back into action after several years in storage. Heading the Aston contingent will be Bob Searles, partnered by TV presenter Tony Jardine. However, another local ace, David Yates from Little Budworth, could be quickest of all in the Ford Mustang he will share with seasoned touring car racer Graham 'Skid' Scarborough. Father and son pairing Graham and Oliver Bryant, meanwhile, will campaign a Morgan Plus 8 and have shown fantastic form in other two-driver races in recent seasons. Another strong father and son team will be Roy and Russell McCarthy in Roy's very potent V8-powered MGB.The stunning ex-Willment Racing Lotus Elan 26R of Pat Thomas/Mike Youles could be the benchmark in class B, but has a series of Aston Martins to contend with, while the class for 1960s saloon cars includes a clutch of quick Minis. Most notable is the car that newcomer Nathalie Boyd will share with racing legend John Rhodes. John was a works Mini racer in the 1960s and will race at Oulton Park for the first time for more than 30 years, while Irishman Conor O'Brien has his Cooper S in action as well. The organisers of the HGTCC are keen to get the fans close to the action, so they are encouraging spectators to visit the paddock and see the cars and drivers up close.
