Marshal located 40 years...

on for Heritage GT bannerThe marshal pictured in a 1966 photograph used in a banner to celebrate the Lotus Elan 26R of Pat Thomas was identified at Donington Park recently during the second round of the Heritage GT Car Challenge.Alf Glasser was a young fire marshal back in 1966 when the photograph of the ex-Willment Racing Elan was taken at Oulton Park. When Thomas brought the car back to racing after a complete rebuild, he used the period photograph in a banner that was made up to show the car competing in its debut season.Amazingly, Glasser is still marshalling 40 years on and was at Donington in his regular role of chief paddock marshal. When he saw the banner on display, he was able to identify himself as the marshal in the photograph.Glasser remembered that the Oulton Park meeting was one of the first times that the silver fire suits were used and that is what he is wearing in the photograph. However, he also remembered that the fireproof suit was certainly not waterproof, as he found out later in the day when they had to rescue the driver of an errant Mini from the Oulton Park lake! The Lotus Elan 26R, raced to 15 wins by John Miles in 1966, is now competing for the first time in Europe for over 30 years. It is being raced in the Heritage GTCC by new owner Pat Thomas and Mike Youles.
