The FIA Historic Formula One Championship will feature a strong grid of 26 cars for rounds 3 & 4 at Donington on 19/20th May. With both the first and second rounds featuring 23 car fields of bona fide F1 cars, the 2007 season is looking strong and Donington will see the return of several top quality driver/car combinations for the first time in HFO this year:
Whilst ITV’s Martin Brundle will be parading Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason’s Tyrrell 011, former Championship regular, John Wilson will be bringing the sister car to race properly at a circuit that he has won at in past years.
Former touring car racer, Bobby Verdon-Roe plans to join the HFO paddock for the event in his newly acquired, ex-James Hunt, McLaren M23. The Portugal-based racer is looking forward to some serious competition in the only FIA Historic Formula One Championship.
Continuing the trend in former GP winning machines, Ean Pugh, a long-time stalwart in the championship returns in his unique Brabham BT34 ‘Lobster Claw’, a winner at the Brazilian GP in 1972. Pugh will be joined on the grid by Steve Allen in his Fittipaldi F5A and, most notably, by the two Watson/Lauda McLaren MP4 cars owned by Aaron Hsu and running under the Lanzante Racing banner. Hsu will drive the MP4-1C/7 flat-bottomed car whilst Dean Lanzante will once again pilot the ground-effect MP4-1CB/6 machine that he drove to a podium finish in the race last year.
Championship Organiser, Oliver McCrudden: “We’ve got a great bunch of guys involved in this championship who turn up year after year, happy to be part of the relaxed motorsport atmosphere that exists in the paddock - and part of the spectacular action on track. We’re really pleased to be able to welcome ‘new’ faces and machines to the fold to keep things fresh and to give the fans even more superb cars to look at racing flat-out the way they were designed to be used.”
