Tour Britannia to visit Royal residence

2007 event route to include Windsor Castle’s Long Walk

Tour Britannia, Britain's historic race-tour for cars built before 1976, has been honoured in receiving permission to run part of its route through Windsor Great Park, adjoining Windsor Castle

The event, which runs from 3rd - 6th September, will see competitors drive through The Great Park and along the spectacular “Long Walk” which leads to the Royal residence.

While the event is competitive, the Windsor Great Park element is purely a drive-through at touring and photographic speeds.

Alec Poole, Tour Britannia's Commercial Director said: “Windsor Castle - with the Long Walk leading up to it - is one of Britain's most iconic images. To see historic motor cars driving there will be absolutely amazing. We are deeply indebted to all those who have made this possible for Tour Britannia.”

Windsor Castle is the largest inhabited castle in the world, and the oldest in continuous occupation. It is one of the Queen's three official residences, and is often said to be her favourite.

The three mile Long Walk was created by Charles II from 1680-1685, by planting a double avenue of elm trees. The central carriage road was added by Queen Anne in 1710. Normally cars and cycles are not permitted to ride along the Long Walk, although a parade of Rolls Royce cars used it in 2002 in a special event to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

Entries for Tour Britannia - at standard rates - close on Monday 2 July.  Details are available on the website TourBritannia.com.
