The Masters Racing Series has unveiled a new opportunity for historic racers to tackle the world's finest circuit, after arranging a race in the Spa Summer Classic meeting over the weekend of 14/15 June.
Competitors from the Top Hat, Cloth Cap, Oldies but Goldies and Stars of the 70s race series will have the chance to race on the Belgian Grand Prix circuit at Spa-Francorchamps, with exact details of the races due to be confirmed shortly.
The trip to Spa has been organised to replace the traditional 'Historycar' event at the Belgian circuit of Chimay, which will not be running in 2008. For the time being at least, insufficient funding is available for the promoters at the Chimay road circuit to meet the safety upgrades required by the RAC Belgium.
Chimay has hosted Top Hat races during the annual 'Historycar' event in recent seasons, but in 2008 car racing will not be possible as an estimated spend of around £400,000 is needed for barrier upgrades.
The local authority continues to support the use of the track and applications for regional government funding will be made, but the work cannot be done for the 2008 season.
"While it is disappointing that Chimay will not be available to us in 2008, we are delighted to be able to offer our competitors an alternative date at Spa," said Christopher Tate of the Masters Racing Series. "Of course, we will closely monitor developments at Chimay, and if we are able to return again in the future, we certainly will."
