Pembrey gets historic festival

The Pembrey circuit in South Wales will have its own historic racing festival in 2008 when the Historic Sports Car Club organises a weekend of racing in July. The meeting will celebrate the life of Welsh Grand Prix driver Tom Pryce and will include the presentation of the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy.

The event, over the weekend of 12/13 July, will be the first major historic race meeting to be held at Pembrey and circuit director Phil Davies wants the meeting to become an annual fixture.

"We're very keen for it to happen and for it to develop into a prestigious event for Pembrey and for Wales," said Davies. "We would like to celebrate Welsh motorsport heritage."

Facilities at Pembrey have been significantly improved over the last couple of years, partly thanks to backing from the Welsh Assembly, and enhancements to the pit and paddock area include new scrutineering bays and administration buildings. The new historic race meeting has already earned support from local and regional government.

The HSCC will take 10 championships and series to Pembrey for the event, including the Derek Bell Trophy, Classic F3 and Formula Junior. Mini-endurance races over 40 minutes will be held for the Guards Trophy and Historic Racing Saloon Championships, while all other classes will have a double-header weekend.
