Heritage GT heads for Snetterton

Competitors in the 2008 Charterhouse Heritage Grand Touring Car Challenge will head east to Snetterton in Norfolk for the eighth and ninth races of the season over the weekend of 19/20 July. The Heritage GT series of races for period machinery is a popular part of the British motor racing scene, with cars ranging from Mini Coopers to Ford Mustangs and from Jaguar E Types to Chevrolet Camaros and Aston Martin V8s. Snetterton is very much a home venue as series organiser Heritage Racing Support is based nearby at Long Stratton. With a grid of up to 25 cars, the Heritage races will be a popular element of the MSVR race meeting and, after qualifying on Saturday, the grid will have a 25-minute race on Sunday morning and a 40-minute two-driver race on Sunday afternoon. The battle for overall glory could be a straight fight between two very potent Sunbeam Tigers. After some engine problems earlier in the season, Irishman Jackie Cochrane is back with his mighty Tiger and will go head to head with the similar car of Chris Beighton. Both drivers are yet to confirm their co-drivers for the second race, but should be very evenly matched on the long straights and fast corners that typify Snetterton.Lining up to take the fight to the Tigers will be the thundering Chevrolet Camaro of father and son team Arthur and Boysie Thurtle. This is home ground for the Essex pair, so another strong result is likely to follow up their recent victory at Thruxton. Other leading runners in class A will include Chris Scragg (Aston Martin V8), Robin and Zoe North (Ford Mustang) and Chris Williams (Morgan Plus 8).In class B, for the less modified pack, Tony Lees is a likely pacesetter in his Morgan Plus 8, while the Porsche 911RS of Andrew Chalmers/Colin Davids is a contender along with Richard Masters (Jaguar XJS) and the spectacular 4.5-litre Triumph TR7V8 of David Falkingham.Four beautiful Aston Martin DB4s will contest their own class and it is the cars of Steven Byrne/Peter Snowdon and Conor O'Brien/Charlie Kemp that should be to the fore, while sometime Aston racer Jeremy Cooke switches to class B for this weekend and shares a Triumph TR4 with Martin Brewer. Meanwhile, in class A, the Ford Cortina of Kate Bennington/Eve Tate takes on the BMW 2002 of Bob Godbold/Anthony Matthews.
