Calum Lockie made his debut in historic saloon car racing at Snetterton on Sunday (31 May) when he partnered Andy Yool in the 40-minute round of the HSCC Historic Racing Saloon Register Championship.At the wheel of Yool's 1964 Ford Anglia, they had a great race to finish sixth overall and third in class in what should be the first of several shared drives this season."We tested on Friday and it went extremely well. We were soon setting front-running times and worked on some set-up changes to further improve the car," said Lockie, who was enjoying a different type of car. Though Calum has extensive sports and GT racing experience, the chance to race a period saloon car was a new challenge.With the ambient temperature rising all the time, they elected to keep qualifying laps to a minimum on Sunday morning but still lined up fourth overall and second in class on the grid. Yool took the first 20-minute stint in the race. "Andy made a great start but then got tangled up with a Jaguar and got held up for a few laps," said Lockie. "Then he got past with a good move into Russell and was able to set his fastest ever Snetterton lap before the pit-stop."After losing a little time during the driver change, Calum then took over for the second half of the race. "I got in and pedalled as hard as I could, but it was very hot and the tyres were suffering." Nevertheless, they claimed sixth overall and third in class, as well as being the first Anglia home. "Our longer stop probably cost us fourth overall and second in class, but it was great fun and Andy did a great job considering he's still quite early in his racing career."They now hope to team up in Andy's Ford Mustang for races at Spa and Oulton Park later this season, including the Spa Classic Six Hours, one of the most prestigious races on the historic racing calendar."My thanks go to Andy and his wife Jean as well as Melindi for their support," said Calum.
