The Masters Historic Racing Donington raceday on Sunday 23rd August is set to boast some impressive cars on the grids of its varied one-day programme.
In the Interserie invitation race, Masters looks forward to a very rare outing for Frank Bradley in the massive 8-litre March 717 CanAm car which should provide real spectacle. He squares up against the experienced Richard Piper in his successful McLaren M8F with its equally vast motor, while John Grant, a Masters regular in his Grand Prix and other cars, has borrowed a McLaren M6F for the occasion. Among the competition for the CanAm monsters in this race will be a 3-litre Lola in the hands of rapid returnee Jonathan Baker, as well as a host of 2-litre prototypes and some of the quickest of the Touring70s ETCC cars.
The World Sportscar Masters put on a great show in the setting sun at the Silverstone Classic evening race and so here, another Lola T70 fight is promised. Nick Linney and Ollie Bryant head the entry but they will be up against a broad spread of marques with the Andy Newall-driven Alfa Romeo T33/3 as the most likely interrupter of Lola dominance.
Sports car fans will be catered for with the Gentlemen Drivers/Cloth Cap grid of pre-66 GT cars, following this group’s dramatic televised encounter at the recent Silverstone Classic. A select field of Jaguar E-Types, AC Cobras and Alfa Romeos, Morgans, Austin Healeys and MGs should ensure some close racing, as ever. The saloon races promise some exciting action, with grids for Under and Over 2 litre cars in various classes, all set to enjoy a final race on the existing shape of Donington before work begins on updating the circuit for Formula 1.
Masters series Director Christopher Tate said: “We are delighted to be able to offer our members a second visit to Donington in 2009. We are pleased with the early response to our Interserie Revival initiative and look forward to this growing further in the next two weeks. We want to make this inaugural race one to remember and would welcome anyone else with suitable cars to come and join us. This promises to be the last time a historic grid will race on the current configuration of Donington and we want everyone, drivers and fans alike, to come and share in the end of an era.”
Qualifying begins at 09:05 and racing at 13:00 on Sunday August 23rd
