SCUNTHORPE No.1 David Howe escaped serious injury after crashing out in thefirst race of the Scorpions' home defeat against Birmingham.Howe tangled with Brummies star Steve Johnston at the Eddie Wright Racewaybut was allowed home after hospital checks and will be thankful that the Lincolnshire club now have a break in their fixture list.Birmingham's 49-41 win was their second maximum four-point haul in twonights, and it puts them in control of the Premier Trophy group.Scunthorpe boss Richard Hollingsworth said: "The most important thing isDavid seems like he is okay. I'm sure we would have won with him in the side, and against the favourites to win the league to lose by eight points without your number one is a decent effort."

BOURNEMOUTH have acted to fill the gap created by Jay Herne's back injury by bringing in Chris Mills as their new No.1.The reigning National League champions moved for the 27-year-old after hisshort-term deal with Rye House came to an end.Bournemouth boss Garry May said: "Chris is certainly the sort of rider who will give us some top end strength and is an ideal replacement for Jay. Weacted quite swiftly when we learned that Chris had been released by RyeHouse and he was very keen to join us."National League newcomers Dudley have also made a signing, with the experienced Jon Armstrong joining in place of wrist-injury victim BenTaylor.Club chairman Nigel Pearson said: "Jon has a reputation as a great team guy and his experience for this short spell will be invaluable to the team. TAYLOR Poole romped to a bumper score to help Stoke to their first win of the season against Sheffield.Poole notched 13+1 and he had good support from Hynek Stichauer with 11+1 inthe 49-44 win which handed them two points. Sheffield picked up a consolation point.Stoke boss Malcolm Vasey said: "The lads were terrific tonight and so were the crowd. I'd like to pay tribute to them because it makes a big difference when they get behind the team."
(SPEEDWAY 4) THE draw has been made for the two British Semi-finals to take place nextmonth.Reigning British champion Chris Harris will ride at King's Lynn on May 12 along with his Bees colleague Eddie Kennett.And in-form former Grand Prix star Scott Nicholls will appear at Sheffieldon May 6, as will Wolverhampton's teenage ace Tai Woffinden.British Speedway management committee member Neil Machin said: "I'mpersonally delighted to see these meetings back on the calendar and you onlyhave to look down the line-ups to see the fans are in for a treat."The top eight from each meeting will go through to the British Final at Wolverhampton on Monday, June 14.
