British Speedway Weekly Round Up

BIG EVENT LATEST... NEWLY crowned British Under-21 champion Joe Haines has already turned his attention to the next target - a place in the British Final! Haines got the better of Tai Woffinden, Lewis Bridger and Kyle Hughes to take the title at Lakeside.

Now he will take his place at his home Premier League track, King's Lynn, on May 12 for the British Semi-Final with a top eight place the priority. If he achieves that, he will ride in the British Final at his home Elite League track Wolverhampton on June 14.

Said Haines: "It was an amazing achievement for me to win the final at Lakeside, I still have to keep pinching myself to realise it's actually happened.

"To beat riders like Tai and Lewis is amazing for me and it's the highlight of my career so far, I'm absolutely delighted. "Now I want to do well in the British Final but I haven't got there yet. The Semi at King's Lynn will be really tough but I feel at home there and I'm sure the Stars fans will turn out in force to support me. "There's some very good riders in the line-up but I'd really love to ride in the British Final at Wolverhampton because I know they'd be cheering for me there as well."

The British Final is the second in the Super 7even series following the successful staging of the Under-21 meeting at the Arena-Essex track. Chris Harris of Coventry is the defending champion and he must qualify from the same meeting as Haines at King's Lynn in order to retain the crown. It's the second time Wolves have hosted the prestigious event which was held at Poole last year when Harris won in brilliant fashion.

 BRITISH SEMI-FINAL DRAW:

SHEFFIELD (Thursday, May 6): Danny King (Ipswich), Scott Nicholls (Ipswich), James Wright (Belle Vue), Jason Bunyan (Stoke), Robert Mear (Unattached), Andrew Tully (Edinburgh), Jordan Frampton (Rye House), Andre Compton (Workington), William Lawson (Belle Vue), Ben Barker (Coventry), Tai Woffinden (Wolverhampton), Stuart Robson (Lakeside), Oliver Allen (Ipswich), Richard Hall (Sheffield), Ricky Ashworth (Sheffield), David Howe (Scunthorpe).

KING'S LYNN (Wednesday, May 12): Lee Richardson (Unattached), Chris Harris (Coventry), Simon Stead (Swindon), Lewis Bridger (Peterborough), James Grieves (Glasgow), Paul Clews (Berwick), Leigh Lanham (Newport and Belle Vue), Adam Roynon (Workington), Chris Schramm (Workington), Joe Haines (King's Lynn and Wolverhampton), Ben Wilson (Redcar), Paul Hurry (Lakeside), Chris Neath (Rye House), Jason King (Newcastle), Carl Wilkinson (Scunthorpe), Eddie Kennett (Coventry).  ELITE LEAGUE LATEST... BELLE VUE'S new signing Tobias Kroner made a dream debut with ten points in the Aces' Monday night win over his parent club Ipswich, which moves them up to second place in the table. Manager Chris Morton said: "I was so pleased with Toby's performance because he hasn't had much racing so far this season. He drove here from Germany because there were no flights and he was desperate to get into action for us. "He had a practice session in the afternoon and looked good, but you never know what will happen until a rider starts racing with three others." COVENTRY have begun their rebuilding process by signing 18-year-old Pole Przemyslaw Pawlicki, who will make his Bees debut against Wolverhampton next Friday. Manager Alun Rossiter said: "He comes with a really good pedigree, although we have to remember his age and he will need to settle in. I'm really pleased to have him, and I do have other irons in the fire because we have to turn around what's been a horrible start to the season. "It's never nice to tell a rider he's out of the team, and Christian (Hefenbrock) is simply a victim of the circumstances of his injury and the fact that we have needed to make a change." EASTBOURNE reserve Ricky Kling kept up his excellent start to the season with double-figure scores as the Eagles overcame Coventry at home and then gained a notable away point at Wolverhampton. Manager Trevor Geer said: "Ricky was star of the show again. If he carries on like this he will be out of the reserves and that's good for us because who is going to go in there? Simon (Gustafsson)? Cameron (Woodward)?  "There is some time to go until then but at least we will always get a good reserve there." IPSWICH have confirmed that reigning World Champion Jason Crump will line up in the Billy Sanders Memorial Trophy at Foxhall on April 29. Crump will team up with Ty Proctor in a Pairs event which features three British and three Australian combinations including home No.1 Scott Nicholls and World Under-21 Champion Darcy Ward. LAKESIDE skipper Adam Shields is pleased with the Hammers' positive start to the Elite League campaign as they prepare for a hectic run at the end of the month. Shields said: "I don't think anyone was really too anxious about the first couple of meetings, but if anyone was over concerned then I don't think they have been around speedway too long. "Performances like we turned in at Swindon and against Coventry the following night are very rewarding when you can see that everyone in the team is giving one hundred per cent and getting the results their efforts deserve." PETERBOROUGH have given their backing to big winter signing Lewis Bridger, who has struggled for points early in his Panthers career. Manager Trevor Swales said: "Of course we are disappointed with the way he has started the season, but no-one is more gutted than Lewis himself. You don't go from riding at number one for Eastbourne for part of last season to not being able to score a point unless there is something wrong. "It is at a time like this that a rider needs everyone to get behind him and that is what the club are doing. Lewis has received plenty of advice from our technical advisor Michael Lee and is now acting upon it." POOLE star Bjarne Pedersen returned to top form with a 14-point haul in the Pirates' convincing win over Swindon, which leaves them clear at the top of the table. Manager Neil Middeditch said: "I said to Bjarne when he came back into the pits after his Heat 11 win that it was vintage Pedersen. He looked quick all meeting.  "By his own admission, Bjarne is ready to have another go at the Grands Prix. He needed a bit of a rest to recharge his batteries, but he's in the GP qualifiers this year, so maybe we'll see him back in the series in 2011. He's certainly quick enough." SWINDON boss Ronnie Russell is angry that the club will be without star reserve Thomas H Jonasson for a month after the Swedish Motor Federation confirmed a ban starting on April 27. Russell said: "I still believe it's completely unjust and the circumstances haven't been given enough consideration.  "He rode very well against Wolverhampton on Thursday night and is just starting to get settled in and now he'll miss an entire month of speedway. It's not right and I would say the same whether he was my rider or not."  WOLVERHAMPTON skipper Tai Woffinden admitted his side had been taken by surprise with Eastbourne's performance at Monmore Green on Monday, with Wolves limited to two points for a narrow 46-44 win. Woffinden said: "I think Eastbourne surprised us by how well they were making the starts and they probably deserved to get something from the meeting on the balance of it all. "They've obviously got a lot of character in their team and we were relieved to get the win in the end, but we know we should have got all three points." PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST... BERWICK made a good choice of guest with ex-Bandit Josef Franc collecting 14 points from five rides as a replacement for the stranded Adrian Rymel in the 52-39 win over Glasgow. Manager Dave Peet said: "We had to make a hurried team for tonight and they all gelled perfectly together admirably covering our stranded Bandits to gain us a good three Trophy points and put us right in there with a top chance of toppling these (Newcastle) Diamonds next weekend."

BIRMINGHAM skipper Jason Lyons says the spirit in the Brummies camp is sky-high following their spectacular run of results in the Premier Trophy. Lyons said: "I'm so proud of the boys and the form they've shown so far because I haven't been at my best so far although I had a good one at Stoke on Saturday which has helped me feel better about my racing."

EDINBURGH still have a chance of reaching the Premier Trophy semi-finals - and were somewhat relieved with the rain-off of last Sunday's key fixture at Newcastle, when they would have been below-strength. Monarchs boss Alex Harkess said: "It is not going to be easy to find another date because we have no spare Sundays on our fixture list. However, when we do go back, hopefully we will have a full team."

GLASGOW are out of contention in their Premier Trophy group after slipping to a home defeat against Workington - the result coming as a surprise despite the injury absence of Robert Ksiezak (bruised kidney and knee swelling). Manager Stewart Dickson said: "That is a meeting we should have won but we contrived to lose it. We did not have the necessary scoring power from the bottom end of the side and while we were winning a few heats we were not gaining the heat advantages that we required and that put a lot of pressure on the lads who were winning these heats."

KING'S LYNN will start their Premier League campaign without skipper Tomas Topinka, who suffered a broken fibula in an horrific crash with Luke Bowen at Rye House on Saturday. Manager Rob Lyon said: "The two riders took about 20 metres of fencing down as they came to a standstill and both laid motionless for at least five minutes. It is a blow for Tom to suffer the injury but it could have been much worse and I am sure the team will pull together to cover for him."

NEWCASTLE are keeping their fingers crossed that No.1 rider Kenni Larsen - who would have missed Sunday's postponed home fixture - will be available for their Premier League opener at Birmingham on Wednesday. Manager George English said: "The rain-off was unfortunate, but our main concern now is getting Kenni back for the trip to Birmingham - otherwise we will have to call upon a guest again. Kenni tried his best to get back for Sunday but, apparently, even the Esbjerg to Harwich ferry broke down so he was completed snookered."

NEWPORT star Kim Nilsson showed his true form with four race wins in a 13-point haul for the Wasps in their impressive home victory over Somerset. Nilsson said: "I am very happy with today. It showed the fans what I can do on, and what I knew I could do all along. I now also hope to improve on this and score like it away from home. I felt very good today and want to continue my form."

REDCAR skipper Gary Havelock says the Bears were boosted by the return from injury of Stuart Swales in last Thursday's home win over Stoke. Havelock said: "It was great to have Stuart back in the side last Thursday. We have missed his points in recent weeks. Jan (Graversen) has proved to be a good acquisition for the club too. This is an area we have been weak in previously, but it is a positive situation when a team has reserves capable of making the top five and so rotating another good rider into the reserve berth eventually."

RYE HOUSE star Jordan Frampton is pleased to be making a success of his move to Hoddesdon, with another top-scoring performance against King's Lynn last weekend. Frampton said: "For a small track, you really have to ride Rye House. I'd liked it when I'd come here as an away rider so I was very happy to come here when I got the offer."

SCUNTHORPE are facing a patch-up job for three fixtures in three days this weekend, with skipper Magnus Karlsson and Viktor Bergstrom unlikely to make it back to the UK despite having flights booked for Thursday. Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "Both of them are riding tomorrow so they can't try to get over before. Magnus did enquire about ferries but they were all fully booked. With a full team they were two (away) meetings I thought we could win, but I don't know what's going to happen now."

SHEFFIELD manager Eric Boocock says his riders have to work on several aspects of their performance after Thursday's home defeat against Birmingham - the Tigers' worst home reverse in over a decade. Boocock said: "We have to help ourselves. I hope some riders have a close look at themselves and ask if they could have done more on Thursday. We were outclassed by a very good team, and we have to work hard at getting our mental approach and mechanical situation right."

SOMERSET know that three points are a must when they face Rye House on Friday in a meeting crucial to their outside chances of reaching the Premier Trophy semi-finals. The Rebels have three ex-Rockets in their team, with Steve Boxall, Tommy Allen and Brent Werner all facing their former club in a match originally abandoned on Good Friday due to a hailstorm.

STOKE promoter Dave Tattum pulled no punches after seeing his Potters side crash to a humiliating 32-60 home defeat at the hands of Birmingham. Tattum said: "That was the worst performance by a Stoke team in all the years that I have promoted here and it was totally unacceptable to the supporters, the sponsors and the club as a whole. We were a complete shambles tonight and changes will now have to be made."

WORKINGTON responded to calls for improvement from boss Ian Thomas with back to back weekend wins over Edinburgh at home and Glasgow away. Thomas said: "The home match was terrific, the best meeting of the season and as near ten out of ten as you can possibly get. Then to go away and put in the effort again to beat the Tigers on their own track was a brilliant response to what I had asked of them." NATIONAL LEAGUE action gets underway this weekend and you can find all relevant news, reports and other information in the NL section onspeedwaygb.com . FIXTURE PICTURE... THURSDAY APRIL 22: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Lakeside 8pm, Ipswich v Poole 7.30, Swindon v Belle Vue 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Redcar v Scunthorpe 7.30, Sheffield v Stoke 7.45  FRIDAY APRIL 23: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Lakeside v Swindon 8pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Scunthorpe v Berwick 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Edinburgh v Glasgow 7.30, Somerset v Rye House 7.30 DEVON/DORSET TROPHY: Plymouth v Weymouth 7.30 SATURDAY APRIL 24: PREMIER TROPHY: Berwick v Newcastle 7pm, Stoke v Scunthorpe 7.30, Workington v Glasgow 7pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Newport v Isle of Wight 2.30, Rye House v Mildenhall 7pm CHALLENGE: Weymouth v Plymouth 7.15 SUNDAY APRIL 25: PREMIER LEAGUE: Newport v Redcar 2.30 PREMIER TROPHY: Glasgow v Edinburgh 4pm, Newcastle v Berwick 6.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Bournemouth v Scunthorpe 4pm, Buxton v Newport 3pm, Mildenhall v King's Lynn 5pm MONDAY APRIL 26: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Belle Vue v Lakeside 7.30, Wolverhampton v Poole 7.30 TUESDAY APRIL 27: NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Dudley v Scunthorpe (at Wolverhampton) 7.30  WEDNESDAY APRIL 28: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Eastbourne v Peterborough 7.30, Poole v Lakeside 7.30  PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Glasgow 7.30 PREMIER TROPHY: King's Lynn v Somerset 7.30  THURSDAY APRIL 29: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Swindon v Eastbourne 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Redcar v Edinburgh 7.30, Sheffield v King's Lynn 7.45 BILLY SANDERS MEMORIAL: Ipswich 7.30  FRIDAY APRIL 30: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Wolverhampton 8pm, Lakeside v Belle Vue 8pm, Peterborough v Ipswich 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Edinburgh v Sheffield 7.30, Somerset v Scunthorpe 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Plymouth v Newport 7.30 SATURDAY MAY 1: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Eastbourne v Belle Vue 7.30 PREMIER LEAGUE: Berwick v Redcar 7pm, Stoke v Workington 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: King's Lynn v Mildenhall 7.30, Rye House v Dudley 7pm,  NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Newport v Plymouth 2.30  SUNDAY MAY 2: PREMIER LEAGUE: Birmingham v Berwick 7pm, Newport v Newcastle 2.30 PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Glasgow v King's Lynn 4pm NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Buxton v Mildenhall 3pm  MONDAY MAY 3: SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Ipswich v Peterborough 2.30, Poole v Belle Vue 7.30, Wolverhampton v Coventry 6pm PREMIER LEAGUE: Newcastle v Newport 6.30, Rye House v Berwick 2pm, Scunthorpe v Somerset 6pm, Workington v Stoke 7pm NATIONAL LEAGUE: Rye House v King's Lynn (follows PL fixture), Scunthorpe v Dudley (follows PL fixture) TUESDAY MAY 4: NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Isle of Wight v Weymouth 7.30 WEDNESDAY MAY 5: PREMIER LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Birmingham v Sheffield 7.30, 2nd leg: King's Lynn v Glasgow 7.30 NATIONAL LEAGUE: Bournemouth v Newport 7.30
