Juta Racing drives across Europe to get to Rockingham

The Juta Racing team completed a 26-hour over-land trek from Lithuania to get to Rockingham for this weekend's Porsche Carrera Cup GB races (24/25 April) when all flights were cancelled last week.

With European flights in turmoil following the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, the Lithuanian team had no choice but to do the journey by road to ensure that they arrived at Rockingham in time for Friday's test session. Neither driver had even seen Rockingham before, so they needed to learn the Northamptonshire track in testing.

With the team truck based in the UK for the season, a five-man crew, including racer Jonas Gelzinis, drove across Europe in a mini bus. They left in the early hours of Wednesday morning and the 1400-mile drive from Lithuania took them through Poland, Germany, Holland, Belgium and France to arrive in the UK at 7am on Thursday.

"We took it in turns to do the driving and get a little sleep," said team manager Audrius Gelzinis. "It was a good journey and we arrived on schedule."

They will now stay in the UK until after the Brands Hatch races next weekend, before some of the crew will fly home and two of the mechanics drive the mini bus back to Lithuania.
