Fisken and Attwood to share Le Mans winner at Silverstone Classic

Gregor Fisken will follow in the footsteps of such legends as Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham and Carroll Shelby when he climbs behind the wheel of an Aston Martin DBR1 at the Silverstone Classic this July.

This isn’t just any DBR1 mind you, for the car that Fisken will share with 1970 Le Mans winner Richard Attwood is none other than the chassis that triumphed at the Grand Prix d’Endurance 11 years earlier in 1959, Aston Martin’s first, and to date only, outright Le Mans 24 Hours victory.

Owing to DBR1/2’s unique achievement in the hands of Shelby and Roy Salvadori, it’s believed that the car is the most valuable Aston Martin is existence.

His upcoming race debut in the DBR1 also sees Gregor become one of the few drivers to have competitive experience of Aston Martin racers old and new thanks to his season spent campaigning a Larbre Competition DBR9 in the 2007 Le Mans Series and at the 24 Hours itself.

Gregor, who mixes with the world’s finest historic automobiles on a day-to-day basis thanks to his Kensington dealership, Fiskens, tested the DBR1 at the Northamptonshire venue for the first time on Wednesday as part of the Silverstone Classic Media day.

“It was just fantastic and the most incredible front-engined 1950’s sportscar I’ve ever driven,” said Gregor. “To be one of the few people to have ever driven a DBR1, let alone the ’59 Le Mans winner, is just such a privilege. And although it’s so far removed from the DBR9 GT1 car I raced a couple of years ago, there’s still something special about them both that’s uniquely Aston Martin.”

As well as at Silverstone, there’s a possibility that Fisken could campaign the car in further historic events throughout the year, although that is dependent on his other modern and classic racing commitments.
