British Speedway Weekly Round Up

BIG EVENT LATEST...

PETERBOROUGH co-promoter Peter Oakes is delighted to see the club handed the Premier League Four Team Tournament in his first year back at the club. And he's urging Panthers fans more accustomed with Elite League racing to turn out in force and sample the best of the Premier League on Sunday, August 15 (2.15).Oakes also feels the event, which is the fourth Super 7even event of the year, is going back home after a few seasons away from the East of England Showground. He said: "It's a great opportunity for Peterborough fans to see the biggest names and talents in the Premier League in a competition that belongs at the East of England Showground."Over the years our fans have had some unforgettable afternoons at the Fours finals and they seen their own team win seven times - six of them when the Panthers were in the Second Division - and it's probably the most exciting meeting in the PL calendar."It's a great opportunity to see riders they wouldn't normally see and also weigh up the potential of young stars who are certain to make it into the Elite League in the future and perhaps even as far as the Speedway World Cup and the Grand Prix series."When you consider Chris Holder and Jason Crump, who finished first and second in the British Grand Prix started their careers in the Premier League you realise how much talent there is at that level."Further news updates and line-ups for major events in British Speedway are available at speedwaygb.com - the official website of the British Speedway Promoters' Association.SUPER 7EVEN SERIES 2010 CALENDARBritish U21 Final, Lakeside - JOE HAINES British Final, Wolverhampton - CHRIS HARRIS Premier League Pairs, Somerset - SHEFFIELD Premier League 4TT, Peterborough, Sunday August 15 Elite League Pairs, Ipswich, Saturday September 4 Premier League Riders Championship, Sheffield, Sunday September 26 Elite Riders' Championship, Peterborough, Saturday October 16ELITE LEAGUE LATEST

BELLE Vue chief David Gordon hit back at claims from rivals Coventry regarding track conditions during the Aces' 51-41 win over the Bees, in which young Aussie Josh Grajczonek again showed his rich potential.Gordon said: "There was nothing wrong with it except the dust problem which is difficult to control when it's so dry. "The only comment I'd really want to make is that we won by ten points.Whenever (Coventry manager) Alun Rossiter is on TV he seems to think he's on the Rosco Show."COVENTRY boss Alun Rossiter had no regrets about his outburst at Belle Vue on Monday, when the two clubs clashed over the Kirkmanshulme Lane circuit.Rossiter said: "The track conditions were atrocious and I stand by what I said on television. I'm not trying to cause trouble or wind people up, I'm just being honest."We gave it a go, and I was pleased with our reserves. Pawlicki had never seen the place before and did well, and I was pleased with Josh (Auty) too. It's a blow that we didn't get anything, but we've just got to move on to the next meeting now."EASTBOURNE No.1 Matej Zagar is set to return to Arlington in Thursday's South coast clash with rivals Poole, having missed the Eagles' last two home matches.Manager Trevor Geer told The Argus: "Let's hope he can get himself sorted out. His form has dipped everywhere and he is pretty concerned about that."We know what he is capable of. (Guest) Adam (Shields) has been fantastic for us, so let's see what Matej can do."IPSWICH suffered a further setback at home last Thursday with a narrow defeat at the hands of reigning champions Wolverhampton, leaving the Witches at the foot of the Elite League table.Manager Pete Simmons said: "We have to set realistic targets for ourselves now, and the first objective is to overtake Eastbourne and climb off the bottom of the table."LAKESIDE will welcome speedway legend Barry Briggs to Purfleet on Friday for an extra date on his Sport Relief tour, with the seven Hammers riders set to present the New Zealander with a cheque.Club owner Stuart Douglas said: "Barry Briggs is a household name, and probably one of the most famous in the history of Speedway."Most will remember him not just as a phenomenal World Champion, but also closer to home for his career as a Wimbledon Don, and I know many of those fans come to watch the Hammers these days. It will be an honour for us to pay tribute to him, and a real treat for the fans - old and young alike". PETERBOROUGH reserve Mathieu Tresarrieu will be back in the Panthers'line-up for the home clash with Swindon on Friday, having recovered from a badly sprained and swollen ankle.Tresarrieu said: "I caught my foot in a hole and twisted it. It was too swollen to even get my boot on but thankfully the hospital told me nothing was broken."It is getting better every day and I will definitely be back for the next meeting."POOLE promoter Matt Ford is expecting a much tougher test from Lakeside on Wednesday than in the Hammers' previous visit which saw the Pirates rack up a huge 70-point total.Ford said: "The 70 point score back in April will have no bearing on this meeting, I think we all know the Lakeside team are better than that, but we are hungry for points and we seem to be breaking barriers this year."We have a tough schedule ahead of us with a visit to Eastbourne on Thursday, Coventry on Friday and then Peterborough on Monday. That means 15 league points available to us and I certainly would like to see us bank as many of those as possible."SWINDON boss Ronnie Russell believes the absence of Swedish reserve Thomas H Jonasson, who had to have a tooth removed following a recent crash, was a vital factor in the Robins' 50-42 defeat at Wolverhampton.Russell told the Swindon Advertiser: "Wolverhampton is a fortress and I said before that Thomas Jonasson was the key, but we went without the key. That's the story really, he would have been the telling factor. "It always looked like we'd nick a point, and even at one stage more than a point, but it just didn't happen. I'm not disappointed with the performance, I'm disappointed with the end result." WOLVERHAMPTON kept their title defence very much on course with a dramatic away win at Ipswich on Thursday, followed up by a hard-fought 50-42 victory over Swindon for three more Elite League points.Boss Peter Adams said: "It's in our hands now, if we don't make the play-offs then we'll have blown it big time, it's ours to lose. And when you look at how young this team is you have to say they have done very well this season and the good thing is there is plenty more to come from them."I think they've done fantastically well and I'm looking forward to seeing how we can continue to improve during the rest of the season with the ultimate aim of reaching the play-offs in peak form."

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK reserve Michal Rajkowski piled up an astonishing paid-19 score as the Bandits gained a crucial 50-40 away win from their basement battle at Redcar, a result which moves them into the Premier League's top ten.Club owner John Anderson said: "Michal was simply unbelievable, and ironically only dropped points to the Bears in what was arguably his easiest race in Heat 8. But in my short time as owner at Berwick the old adage 'that's speedway' comes into play an awful lot. This was a fine away effort and we deserved to win."BIRMINGHAM expect to have American star Chris Kerr back in their team for a busy week of Premier League racing, having spent two months on the sidelines with a broken leg.Brummies boss Graham Drury said: "The rest of the team have done a great job to keep the season going with our two major injuries (Kerr and Aaron Summers), and I'm hoping the return of Chris will be just the shot in the arm we need."EDINBURGH co-promoter John Campbell says there is still much work to be done before the Monarchs can contemplate Premier League success this year to add to their titles of 2003 and 2008.Campbell told The Scotsman: "To be nine points clear at this early stage is fantastic, but the league will not be won for some weeks yet. We have a surfeit of matches to catch up on next month and this will prove a critical period for us and our ambitions. Anything could go wrong and to win a league title it is so important to steer clear of injuries."GLASGOW skipper Lee Dicken is hopeful of returning in this Sunday's home clash with Birmingham, having been forced to have an operation to remove a foreign body from his leg.Dicken told Speedway Star: "Things are starting to take a massive turn for the better and I feel there is light at the end of the tunnel. The one good thing is that the weather has been bad up at Glasgow so I have only missed the one fixture."KING'S LYNN have a major question mark over the future of British Under-21 Champion Joe Haines, who was set for talks with parent club Wolverhampton as he is considering quitting the sport.Stars manager Rob Lyon said: "After last week's match he came to me and said that he wasn't enjoying his speedway and that he was going to give it up.There is a slim chance we may see him on Wednesday, if we do I would like the crowd to really get behind him and give him some encouragement, he is a talented rider who just needs to start enjoying his racing again.".NEWCASTLE'S stunning run of form continued with their dramatic 47-43 win at Sheffield on Thursday - a venue where the Diamonds' recent record has been totally unsuccessful.Manager George English said: "At last a Newcastle side has come here and ridden to their full and correct potential. They were excellent and thoroughly enjoyed this match, providing us with the first such win here for many a long season. Mark Lemon and his 15-point maximum was superb."NEWPORT'S Welsh Open individual event was won by Polish star Chris Slabon, making a rare UK appearance after representing Ipswich earlier in his career. Ryan Fisher finished second with Edward Kennett third, whilst Craig Watson was the best home rider in fourth.REDCAR are hoping to break a long-running sequence in Thursday's clash with King's Lynn, having never beaten the Stars in any competition since speedway was rekindled on Teesside in 2006.Manager Jitendra Duffill said: "The boys are hurting after last week and are keen to make amends. We will keep plugging away and there were encouraging signs such as the indication that Ben Wilson is returning to form after his major crash in May. He rode well with Gary Havelock last Thursday so we will retain that pairing."RYE HOUSE return from a fortnight's break when they face arch-rivals King's Lynn, and team manager John Sampford is ready for a tight contest. He said: "We expect what is always a tough local derby. The Stars always come to Rye House looking to win, and this match shouldn't be any different. It's up to us to stop them, to get back on track after losing at home to Edinburgh."It's the start of a tough run, because we've then got trips to Workington and - on successive days - Edinburgh, Berwick and Glasgow. We'll be targeting something from those to stay in the running for the Play-Offs." SCUNTHORPE expect to be at full strength for their trip to Sheffield on Thursday as Tero Aarnio did not break any bones in his crash at King's Lynn last week, and Viktor Bergstrom is also due back in action after a leg injury.Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "Viktor was back at hospital yesterday having a protective cover fitted, and he'll be back on Thursday. It takes years for skin grafts to properly heal, but now he's in a position where if he falls off he won't do any more damage to it."SHEFFIELD heroes Ricky Ashworth and Josh Auty rewarded themselves with a trip to the British Grand Prix after securing the Premier League Pairs title for the club at Somerset on Friday.Ashworth said: "I said in the build-up to the meeting that if we finished in the final at Somerset I would make my first visit to Cardiff and I wasn't disappointed. It means so much for me on a personal basis to bring some success to Sheffield because it's the one club I've been with throughout my career."SOMERSET are without a home fixture this Friday but still face an important weekend with trips to Workington and Newcastle.Promoter Debbie Hancock said: "It was virtually impossible to bring forward any of our forthcoming matches to slot into the spare date we have this Friday, and with the guys having to travel up to Cumbria and then onto Newcastle over the weekend we thought that it would be counterproductive to arrange a challenge match for Friday."STOKE skipper Jason Bunyan underwent surgery on Monday morning to pin and plate the broken arm he sustained in the victory over Berwick at Loomer Road on Sunday afternoon.Promoter Dave Tattum said: "The hospital are pleased with the way the operation went and he now has a plaster cast on the arm. We will release further information as and when we have it."WORKINGTON owner Keith Denham is delighted to see the re-opening of the small bridge which provides an entrance to Derwent Park, which has been closed since the November floods and has had an impact on home match attendances.Denham said: "The work being done is relatively minor but it should never have gone so long before the matter was resolved. People who have been coming to Derwent Park for years are not bothering now because they don't want to walk round or damage their cars by driving up the other road which is full of potholes. We now have permission to have it opened again."
