Liz Halliday will make her Goodwood Revival debut this September after being invited by the organisers to drive her father’s rare Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Coda Tronca in the prestigious Fordwater Trophy Race.
Sportscar racer Halliday, the most successful female driver in American Le Mans Series history, decided to return the car, one of just 29 of its type ever made, to the track this year to celebrate Alfa Romeo’s centenary. Although her debut at the Monza Coppa Intereuropa was delayed by mechanical issues, she will race it for the first time at the Silverstone Classic this weekend and is delighted to have added the Goodwood Revival to her schedule.
“It’s a huge honour to be invited to race in the Fordwater Trophy,” she said. “I really wanted to be involved this year to celebrate Alfa’s 100th anniversary and I’d like to sincerely thank the organisers for accepting my entry. It will mean a lot to my dad to know I’m racing his car at such an incredible event, and I am just sad that he is not well enough to be there.”
The Goodwood Revival is the world’s most popular historic race meeting and is entirely staged in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. Competitors and spectators don period costume for the weekend, while motorsport luminaries such as Sir Stirling Moss, Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek Bell are all regular participants.
The Fordwater Trophy race caters for special slippery-bodied sports and GT cars, engineered for endurance racing at high-speed circuits such as Monza and Le Mans.
Halliday has driven the notoriously demanding Goodwood circuit before, but has never raced there and is looking forward to the challenge
“It’s very fast with not much run-off so I know how difficult it is,” Halliday said. “The first part of the track is really quick, but although the SZ isn’t the most powerful of cars, it is fairly nippy and I hope that will help it around the latter part of the circuit.
“Really we’re there to showcase the car though. It’s a really beautiful little machine and will fit in perfectly in the Fordwater Trophy.
“A lot of my racing friends have driven at the Revival before, but I haven’t, so I’m really excited to give it a go – this one’s for you Dad!”
