BMW still in front at Spa-Francorchamps

Impressive fight back by the no. 78 BMW M3 GT2.

Both BMW M3 GT2s of Team BMW Motorsport left the night at the 24-hour race of Spa-Francorchamps (BE) behind them without being involved in any incidents. Car number 79 is holding the lead after 15 hours. As the track dried out, following heavy rain showers, Dirk Müller (DE) and Dirk Werner (DE) put in many quick laps during their two double stints, increasing the gap to the cars behind them. Dirk Adorf (DE) was at the wheel of the BMW M3 GT2 at the crack of dawn and successfully defended the lead.

After dropping back to 14th, following a problem with the starter, car number 78 constantly made up ground during the night. Running in tenth, Jörg Müller (DE) handed over to Uwe Alzen (DE) on lap 226. Alzen managed to move up another two positions before Pedro Lamy (PT) continued the trio’s fight back. The Portuguese driver benefited from an accident between the second-placed Ferrari F430 GT (#2) and the no. 50 Audi R8 LMS, so that Jörg Müller could rejoin the race on lap 316 in fifth.

Pedro Lamy (Car Number 78):“The rain at the beginning of the night certainly didn’t make our lives easier. It was neither really wet nor dry. Quite early I changed to dry tyres, but on the first laps I lost some time, as it was very hard to find grip. Two technical problems threw us back, but over the course of the night we managed to work ourselves back up to fifth after the track had dried out. We want to continue this chase in the coming hours.”

Dirk Adorf (Car Number 79):“During my first night stints it was really tough out there. Conditions were exactly what you don’t want as a driver. However, when the track dried out again we successfully consolidated our lead. It was great fun driving at the break of dawn. I’m excited what the next hours will bring.”
