A proven track record and more than $2 million in scholarships separate Skip Barber from the pack
When karters take to the track this December for the 14th edition of theSkip Barber Karting Scholarship Shoot-out at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, they will join a list thatincludes a who’s who of karting as well as some of the best young professional racers to come out ofNorth America.
Since Ryan Hunter-Reay, Phil Giebler and Michael Valiante were among the winners of the first KartingShoot-out in 1998, Skip Barber Racing School has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships tokarters making their transition into race cars. The list of winners includes some of professional racing’sbiggest names: Hunter-Reay, Valiante, Patrick Long, A.J. Allmendinger, Alexander Rossi, Ricky andJordan Taylor and Gabby Chaves. Three of the more recent champions of the BFGoodrich/Skip BarberNational Presented by Mazda – Jonathan Goring in 2006, Joel Miller in 2007 and Connor De Phillippi in2009 – won scholarships at the Shoot-out. Spencer Pigot, the point leader after ten of 14 rounds in thisyear’s championship was one of the big winners at the most recent Shoot-out.
A quick scan of the list of participants over the years is as impressive: Joey Hand, Jonathan Bomarito,James Gue, Jonathan Summerton, Scott Speed, Parker Kligerman, Josef Newgarden, Conor Daly andSage Karam, to name just a few.
The Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shoot-out returns to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca December 3-6.Drivers will compete for $300,000 in scholarships, including two top prizes of fully funded rides in the2011 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National Presented by Mazda, courtesy MAZDASPEED MotorsportsDevelopment and a grant from the FIA Institute for Motor Sport Safety and Sustainability. Registration isnow underway for this year’s event. Any karter intending to enter the Shoot-out must submit anapplication by September 30. The application can be found by visiting
