Raphael Matos and the de Ferran Dragon Racing team was on target for its second consecutive top 10 finish before a late incident with 10 laps remaining spoiled the effort at the IZOD IndyCar Series Indy Grand Prix at Sonoma. With 65 laps complete, Matos was in a battle for position with Takuma Sato when hit from behind by another driver. The  contact caused too much damage to repair and Matos was forced to retire from the race with seven laps left. “I'm very disappointed,” Matos said. “We had a top 10 car, but the tires went off really bad on the last stint. It got very difficult to hold off Sato and he was able to pass me inside on turn 11. When I moved in behind him (Bertrand) Baguette dive bombed me and broke my suspension. We were in a position to collect some points, but that's how it goes sometimes.”“We had a top 10 car for most of the race and felt pretty good,” team co-owner Steve Luczo said. “We had contact twice in the race. It’s always good to be patient.”Matos started 10th and moved as high as ninth during the first 20 laps. He survived one scare on lap 24 when Simona de Silvestro made contact and sent the #2 car into the air. Matos stayed with it and was able to move back to 11th a few laps later. He climbed back into the top 10 on lap 55, but then had difficulty with the tires. “Obviously we’re disappointed because we were looking good to finish in the top 10 for a greater part of the race,” managing partner and team president Gil de Ferran said. “Unfortunately the set up was a little hard on the tires and our last set ran out with a few laps left. That’s when we came under attack and eventually got taken out. It’s a shame, because it was a good opportunity for us to finish strong on the road courses.”With Sonoma being the final road course race of the season, Matos finished ninth in the Mario Andretti Road Course standings with 183 points.
