(SPEEDWAY 1) WORKINGTON have retained the Young Shield with a second successive aggregate Final win over Rye House. The Rockets had built up a heatlhy first leg advantage but the Comets hit back strongly at Derwent Park to win 66-28 for an 18-point victory overall. Rye House continued to suffer from injury problems as, already without both regular reserves, Stefan Ekberg crashed out in Heat 5 although he has now been released from hospital. Workington were led by Rusty Harrison with a six-ride paid maximum and, in an impressive overall display, Chris Schramm, Richard Lawson, Peter Kildemand and Andre Compton were all in double figures as the Comets took the silverware for the third year on the trot. (SPEEDWAY 2) DUDLEY skipper Lee Smart was crowned National League Riders' Champion in a dramatic finish at Rye House. Smart, who dropped just one point from his five rides, took advantage of previous leader Simon Lambert coming to grief in the penultimate race, which set up a showdown between Smart and defending champion Craig Cook. Cook trailed Smart by one point but brought his rival down as the two riders contested the first bend, and Smart's win in the re-run was enough for the crown, the Heathens man being joined on the rostrum by second-placed Lambert and Adam Allott in third. Smart said: "Simon was really unlucky with that crash, to be fair, it was pretty much his in the bag. But I had a bit of luck going my way, and it turned out good. "I've had an amazing season all around this year. Dudley finished top of the League, and although we went out in the play-offs, it's been an awesome year. The following we get is tremendous."

(SPEEDWAY 3)NEWCASTLE collected their third item of major silverware this season by overcoming Edinburgh to lift the Premier League Knockout Cup.The Diamonds had already won the Premier Trophy and the Premier League play-offs but were taken down to the final race of a dramatic Final by the league champions.Edinburgh held a slender five-point lead from their home leg but kept in touch throughout and led by a point on aggregate with three heats to go.However, Kenni Larsen and guest Stuart Robson secured a vital 5-1 over Ryan Fisher in Heat 13, and the Diamonds maintained their three-point lead over the last two races with Larsen and Rene Bach holding Kalle Katajisto at bay in Heat 15 with the Monarchs requiring a 5-1.Newcastle boss George English said: "This has been the most fantastic season for the Diamonds, and the success has been thoroughly deserved. It's been a magnificent night here tonight - one of the best!"

(SPEEDWAY 4)BUXTON have completed a clean sweep of team honours by defeating Newport to lift the National League title.The Hitmen, already Cup and Trophy winners, got the better of the Hornets56-35 in a one-legged Grand Final on the last day of the season after the scheduled first leg in South Wales had been washed out on Friday.Australian youngster Robert Branford scored an impressive 14 (paid 15) for the home side, with Craig Cook adding 12, whilst Newport guest Steve Worrall was their top man with 11.
