Under bright blue skies and in front of a bumper crowd, Christian Glaesel took a double win on day one of the Catalunya Classic Revival at the Circuit de Catalunya today, Saturday.
The German driver scored his first win in the GP Masters race beating team-mate Joaquin Folch, both in Brabham BT49s. His second win came in the following race when he shared his Mercedes C11 to win the inaugural Masters Sports-Prototype event, sharing the car with Folch.
Glaesel’s GP Masters win was far from easy. Starting from pole, he eased away from Folch until his ex-Riccardo Patrese Brabham BT49 lost second gear four laps from home. “To begin with, I could hold it in gear but then it became impossible. It was really hard in the chicane at the end of the lap because you need second. First gear was not right and in third it would stutter,” explained the German.
Folch caught him and finished just 0.361s behind at flagfall, while Manfredo Rossi di Montelera (Brabham BT42) took third overall after an early duel with the McLaren M23 of Christophe D’Ansembourg.
Glaesel and Folch teamed up to dominate the Masters Sports-Prototype race in the ex-Jochen Mass/Michael Schumacher Mercedes C11. They were chased home by Group C2 returnee Ferdinand de Lesseps (Spice SE90) and the older 1988 Spice of Mike Donovan.
The second MS-P and GPM races will be tomorrow as part of the Espiritu de Montjuic, along with Interserie Revival, Pre-66 Touring Cars, Gentlemen Drivers Pre-66 GT Cars and WSM Pre-74 sports cars.
