Motorsport festival at the Sachsenring with 13 races

ADAC Masters Weekend, FIA GT1 and MINI Challenge compete The ADAC Masters Weekend at the Sachsenring has become a genuine crowd-puller over the years. Full grandstands are expected again in 2011 because on the weekend between 12 and 15 May an official world championship competes on the traditional roller-coaster track alongside the motorsport platform’s four regular series’. The 600 hp sportscars contesting the FIA GT World Championship stage their fourth race of the season and sole appearance in Germany at the Sachsenring. Also on the grid: the MINI Challenge. The most prominent driver among the lifestyle racers is Cora Schumacher, wife of race ace Ralf Schumacher. ADAC GT Masters: local matador in the spotlightSaxony’s long motorsport tradition is reflected in the ADAC GT Masters by the considerable number of participants from the state. Among others, brothers Charlie and Philip Geipel from Plauen fight for points in the "super sportscar league” – not side by side like Oschersleben winners Johannes and Ferdinand Stuck, but as opponents. Charlie Geipel starts the two one-hour races together with veteran Frank Schmickler in a Mühlner Porsche, while his older brother Philip is team mate of defending champion Albert von Thurn und Taxis in a Reiter Lamborghini. Following an injury induced break from the opener at Oschersleben Geipel/von Thurn und Taxis now celebrate their delayed season start. Team newcomers NK Racing from Altenburg also relies on Lamborghini. Michael Golz and Carsten Seifert from Dresden share the cockpit. Ex-DTM driver Alexandros Margaritis (GR) and Dino Lunardi (F) arrive as championship leaders, the BMW-Aplina drivers are seven points ahead of ABT-Audi pair Christer Jöns/Jens Klingmann (D/D). The overall standings are a reflection of the huge variety of brands forming record grids in the ADAC GT Masters. Five different manufacturers fill the first five places.ATS Formula 3 Cup: Series leader Stanaway targets more Sachsenring winsIn 2010 Richie Stanaway (NZ) celebrated two wins at the Sachsenring and was Formel ADAC champions at the season’s end. He now returns to the scene of his triumph as ATS Formula 3 Cup competitor. The New Zealander who lives in Berlin has made a successful move up to next highest single-seater class: In the previous four races he took three wins and a second place and is championship leader. His closest rival is currently Marco Sørensen who is just four points behind. The Dane celebrated a victory at the Sachsenring in 2008 – also in Formel ADAC. Third in the standings is Tom Blomqvist (GB) the son of former World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist. Formel ADAC: Last year’s winner Wehrlein aims for top of table Pascal Wehrlein travels to the Sachsenring with fond memories. In 2010 the driver supported by ‘ADAC Stiftung Sport’ took his first win in a single-seater in the third race of the weekend. He now contests his second Formel ADAC season and would obviously like to add more victories to his Sachsenring score card. This would also help him to knock Briton Emil Bernstorff from the top of the table, which the series newcomer clinched with two wins at the opening round at Oschersleben. Bernstorff has 68 points, Wehrlein 61. ADAC PROCAR: Who will knock the double winners from their perch? The two ADAC PROCAR divisions were dominated by two drivers at Oschersleben. BMW driver and last year’s runner-up Johannes Leidinger (Nalbach) won both races in Division 1, in Division 2 there was no way to overtake Niels Mierschke (Fränkisch-Crumbach) in the Ford Fiesta. The chasing pack aims to stop the two dominant drivers at the Sachsenring. The two races on Sunday afternoon will show whether they manage. The number of potential rivals has certainly increased since Klaus Bingler and Ronny Reinsberger (Division 2) and also Andreas Kast and Matthias Kaul (Division 1) compete at the Sachsenring. FIA GT1 World Championship: Germany sets the tone again in 2011The inaugural season of the new FIA GT sportscar World Championship ended in triumph and the title for German Michael Bartels and his team Vitaphone Racing. Although the champion is no longer part of the action this year, German is once again the language at the head of the FIA GT1 World Championship standings. After three events Marc Basseng and Markus Winkelhock top the overall classification. They compete for the Saxony based ALL-INKL.COM Münnich Motorsport team from Friedersdorf. Lurking close behind are the German Nissan drivers Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr and also the Berliner Stefan Mücke and his team mate Darren Turner from the Paderborn based Aston Martin team Young Drivers AMR. Like every World Championship weekend a one-hour "Qualifying Race” (start Sat. 14:15) and a "Championship Race” (Son. 14:15) will be held at the Sachsenring. TV coverage on kabel eins and SPORT1, livestream in the InternetThe two ADAC GT Masters races are broadcast on "kabel eins” (Sat and Son from 11:45). "kabel eins” shows the TV highlights of events from Sachsenring (16 May, 00:05) and also "SPORT1” (18 May, 23:30 and 21 May, 11:45). The Formel ADAC, ATS Formula 3 Cup and ADAC PROCAR races can also be viewed as livestream via the series’ websites as can the FIA GT1 World Championship. "SPORT1” broadcasts highlights of the World Championship races.
