Meadows tops Carrera Cup GB test at Snetterton

As one-hundredth of a second split the top three drivers, Michael Meadows ended the day on top of the times in testing for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Snetterton today (5 August). Ahead of this weekend’s rounds 10 and 11 of the championship, Meadows headed SAS/Redline team mate James Sutton and Euan Hankey (Parker with Juta) by the slenderest of margins. In warm sunshine, a tremendous 25-car field tackled the new Snetterton 300 circuit and it was Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) who shot to fourth overall and first in Pro-Am1 late in the afternoon session. Keith Webster (Redline Racing) headed Pro-Am2.When they switched to new tyres with 15 minutes of the second session remaining, Meadows and Sutton dislodged Hankey from P1, but it was incredibly close around the new three-mile track. “It was very, very tight and qualifying will be close,” said Meadows. “Perfect; it’s been a good day.” Sutton was equally pleased with the team’s performance. “It was very, very solid and we’re aiming at an SAS front row in qualifying.”However, Hankey believes he is well set to really take the fight to the two SAS racers. “I’m really happy with that,” he said. “We’ve struggled in qualifying so far this season but we now seem to have found the qualifying pace,” he said, despite missing the closing stages of the second session when a trip over the kerb at Hamilton’s damaged a rear tyre.Topping Pro-Am1 was Gelzinis with a late charge. “There were too many mistakes in the beginning so I tried to cool down and drove one lap carefully, without pushing too much,” said the Lithuanian driver. “I still have room to improve,” he added after ending the day six-tenths of a second slower than Meadows. Rounding out the top six overall was series newcomer Ben Barker (Parr Motorsport) and Richard Plant (Team Parker Racing). Barker was very impressive in the first of two Carrera Cup GB weekends. “I just hit traffic on the best lap; it would definitely have been faster,” said the regular Carrera Cup Australia racer. Plant, meanwhile, didn’t get the best out of his new tyres and felt he should have been faster. Ben Hetherington (Oman Air/Redline) was a strong seventh from Michael Caine (Nationwide/Motorbase) and Caine was the leading driver not to use new tyres.Behind Gelzinis in Pro-Am1 came Ahmad Al Harthy (Oman Air/Redline) and George Richardson (Motorbase Performance). “It’s good to be back on familiar ground,” said Al Harthy after recent forays to Dijon and the Nurburgring. “I’m pretty happy with my pace, but we know we can go quicker.” Richardson was also impressive despite missing most of the first session after a minor off. “I’m very pleased considering we are a session down,” he said.Webster, fresh from a charity cycle ride to Paris, headed Pro-Am2 and ended the day a second clear of George Brewster (Celtic Speed). “I’m fitter than I’ve ever been after the bike ride,” said Webster. “Now I need to try and replicate that in qualifying.” Close behind Brewster to wrap up the top three in Pro-Am2 was Steve Parish (Motorbase Performance).
