Team Suzuki GB rider Dan Thornhill took the British Masters MXY2 championship title at the weekend, as the penultimate round of the series visited Hawkstone Park near Shrewsbury.
Starting the weekend off well with a second position in qualifying, ensuring a great gate pick, Thornhill made full use of it to get out of the gate in second in the first race, before quickly moving up and into the lead, pulling a 30-second margin to take the win. Third off the start in race two, and a battle to move up into second, Thornhill then set about chasing down the leader, before suffering a small fall while attempting to pass a backmarker, remounting to take third at the flag.
Taking that elusive holeshot in the third moto, Thornhill held position throughout a hard fought battle to clinch victory. With the overall championship victory in sight, the RM-Z250 rode a smart final race finishing in second, taking the overall win, but crucially taking enough points to claim the 2011 title.
Dan Thornhill: "A huge thanks to the entire team and all of our sponsors. It wasn't a walk in the park, but we did what we needed to do and to clinch the title one round early is a big relief. As ever, the RM-Z250 has been a joy to ride this season and I have to thank Paul and the guys for all their help and support."
Paul Butler team manager, “For Dan to win a round early and at such a demanding track like Hawkstone Park, really goes to show the efforts and professionalism of this 16 year old. We've provided Dan with an RM125 where he is going to ride at the final rounds of the BSMA championship this weekend at Little Silver, and then Dan, Keaton and Luke will be riding at Matterley Basin for the British Grand Prix in the European 125cc class.”
