Sunoco Daytona Challenge update‏

Felipe Nasr drive away with the prize?

With just a few races left until the winner of the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona challenge is crowned; you may think that British F3 driver, Felipe Nasr, has run away with it with an unobtainable lead - but as we have seen in the past two challenges it can all change! The next point scoring round is for Britcar registered racers at Snetterton this weekend. Javier Morcillo from the series is currently in fourth position with 55.92 average points.

Javier who was once leading the challenge has consistently been in the top 3, but unfortunately lowered his average point score after problems at the Thruxton fourth round with torrential rain causing the car to spin on the opening laps. At the next round at Spa there were problems with the cars steering and gearbox; however Morcillo still managed a sixth place. The last round at Castle Combe saw Morcillo take pole in his Azteca/Neil Garner Motorsport Mosler, but unfortunately not finish the race due to once again spinning into the barriers.

If Morcillo can get his point scoring streak back this weekend and score maximum points, 100 for a race win, 20 for pole position and 20 for fastest lap, then his average points score will be up to 67.9 putting him back up to second place. However after a brief summer break the Cooper Tires British F3 and Avon Tyres British GT guys are back on track at Rockingham the first weekend of September and are all looking to up their point scores.

Marcus Clutton from ABG Motorsport in GT4, has had a very successful season so far along with team mate Peter Belshaw. Marcus is currently third in the challenge standings with 56.33 points; an extremely good score as the number of cars on the GT4 grid are constantly changing. If less than 10 cars are out then a lower percentage of points are awarded i.e. 70% of points if 7 cars are on the grid. However with the GT grids growing every race Marcus could potentially take the win. If Marcus scores maximum points at the next Rockingham round he can increase his average point score to 72.25 which would propel him into second place even if Javier was to score maximum points.

This all depends on newcomer to the top 5 standings, second placed Mtech driver Matt Griffin, and whether in the GT3 class he can score maximum points over the weekend. In the same class is the United Autosport duo, Matthew Bell and Michael Guasch, who are currently sitting in joint fifth place in the standings. They are currently leading the championship and are hoping to maintain their lead, which could make them a potential threat to current challenge leader Felipe Nasr. If they did take the lead and a tie breaker situation arose then the winner would be determined by looking at individual numbers of fastest laps and pole positions.

In the Cooper Tires British Formula 3, Carlin driver Felipe Nasr currently leads the challenge as well as the British F3 championship. If Nasr was to take maximum points at the next round at Rockingham then his average score will increase to 96.25. However if he was to score no points then his score would be lowered to 78.75 - if GT driver Matt Griffin was to score maximum points then they would both be in joint first place.

There is however one wildcard in the British F3 who has been slowly climbing up the standings after finding his feet in the championship – Will Buller.

The last British F3 round at Spa saw Buller take two wins and a pole position; moving him from 35th to 15th in the challenge standings. If Will continues with his winning streak at Rockingham and takes the maximum points on offer he could be in the top 5, and if Nasr doesn’t score high points he could very well be a potential winner. There are many other possible scenarios that could arise especially if there were some non point scorers. Felipe Nasr may well be at the top of the challenge standings but there are many other racers who are hot on his heels and it could be all change very soon!
