Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge Final Standings

This weekend Silverstone hosted the final round of the Avon Tyres British GT Championship and the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series - which were also the last point scoring rounds counting towards the Sunoco Daytona Challenge. The final point scoring race for the Britcar MSA British Endurance Championship was the Britcar 24hr at Silverstone last weekend.

Although British Formula 3 driver Felipe Nasr has already won the challenge the race for second place was still to be decided this weekend. The closet contenders to Felipe were Javier Morcillo in Britcar, Matt Griffin in British GT class 3 and Marcus Clutton in British GT class 4.

The Britcar 24hr at Silverstone unfortunately saw Javier Morcillo lower his average point score after a DNF in the Strata 21 Mosler. Morcillo raced alongside usual team mate and fellow Spaniard Manuel Cintrano, the pair teamed up with Paul White and Calum Lockie to race for the 24hrs.

Unfortunately the car suffered from gearbox trouble and had to retire from the race. Despite this Javier still finished in the top 3 in the final challenge standings however he is already looking forward to contending the challenge win next year!

“We had a bad year so I’m really happy with third! Next year the Sunoco Daytona Challenge will be my priority and we are already working towards 2012.” Javier Morcillo

In the British GT this weekend the Beechdean Motorsport Aston Martin of Jonathan Adam and Andrew Howard secured victory in the final round at Silverstone. However third place was good enough to clinch the 2011 title for CRS Racing pair Glynn and Jim Geddie. This also saw them move up the challenge standings and finish inside the top 10.

It was however Marcus Clutton who had the most successful weekend after winning the GT4 class championship title along with team-mate Peter Belshaw. The ABG Motorsport pair finished second in class in the race, behind Lotus duo Chris Holmes and Phil Glew, but the point score was enough to give them victory and put Marcus second overall in the challenge standings.

“It’s been a fantastic year for me and the Sunoco Daytona Challenge has made it so much more exciting. Of course it’s a shame I didn’t win but I have had some great publicity and would like to thank all involved.” Marcus Clutton

Matt Griffin who had been second in the challenge unfortunately lowered his average point score at Silverstone this weekend after finishing 9th. Griffin’s hopes of taking the championship win and finishing second in the challenge came to an end after been given a stop-go penalty for a pit-stop infringement.

The first DP test was due this weekend at Alabama however Felipe will not attend due to single-seater commitments in preparation for the F3 race in Macau next month. The first test for Felipe will now be in early December at the Daytona International Speedway.
