Cayman Interseries Shows Up In Full Force at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

for Rennsport Reunion IV

Largest Field in History Set For a Sprint and 45-Minute Doubleheader Sunday

The Cayman Interseries, the world’s only racing series celebrating Porsche’s rich racing heritage, has hit Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in full force this weekend for its inaugural Porsche Rennsport Reunion appearance, October 14 – 16.

The biggest and most prestigious event to date in the three-year history of the Cayman Interseries has attracted a record 23 entries that will compete in a pair of championship points-paying races this weekend.  A schedule that was revised in cooperation with event organizers just this week features practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday and two races on Sunday, including a morning sprint and a 45-minute finale that afternoon.

The on-track schedule will be backed up by a full slate of promotional and fundraising activities this weekend, including an all-competitor photo shoot that took place on the actual race track Thursday afternoon. The Cayman Interseries is also racing in support of the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) this weekend and will host several young neurofibromatosis (NF) patients and their families at the track on Saturday, in cooperation with Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The Cayman Interseries is a modern-day showcase of Porsche competition excellence as well as a high-speed tribute to some of the most famous Porsche racing cars of all time. The series features the exclusive use of 2009 through 2011 Porsche Cayman S models that are raced in near-stock configuration by a competitive group of emerging and sportsman drivers alike. The heritage connection comes in the form of each Cayman’s livery that has a direct and visible link to a legendary or unique Porsche race car from the past. The series was a natural fit for Rennsport Reunion, the ultimate celebration of Porsche’s illustrious racing history and heritage.

The Cayman Interseries is also about close competition on the track and a pair of drivers that has combined to win nearly every race this season has led the charge to Rennsport.

Lee Davis, who drives his black and red No. 33 Cayman S that carries the colors of the Advan Porsche 956s and 962s and Luna-C Clothing, is coming off a perfect weekend sweep at the most recent series race at Road Atlanta last month.  Davis has battled all season long with Mark Sandridge, who in turn has taken his fair share of 2011 race victories in his white and red-and-yellow striped No. 49 Cayman S, which is themed after his 1994 IMSA Champion Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR.  Sandridge still partners with Joe Varde, his original teammate from that championship season.

Davis, who frequently co-drives with his coach and teammate Ryan Eversley, is the reigning Cayman Interseries Endurance Champion. This weekend, Davis, Sandridge and the competition will be joined on track by current Cayman Interseries Sprint Champion Jim Bacus, who is making his first start of the season in the popular purple and green No. 3 Cayman S that runs the striking livery of the Martini “Hippy” Porsche 917LH that finished second in the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The Cayman Interseries is also adding to the celebration around the fourth edition of Rennsport Reunion this weekend with a special “Rennsport Edition” Cayman S that will be debuted and raced at Laguna Seca. The one-off car will be unveiled at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning in the Cayman Interseries paddock area by a group of VIPS from Porsche Cars North America, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Napleton Porsche of Westmont and some of the winning and legendary drivers in attendance, including Hurley Haywood and David Donohue. Cayman Interseries owners and founders Napleton Porsche will sell the car to highest bidder in the weeks following Rennsport Reunion, with a significant portion of the proceeds being donated to the Children’s Tumor Foundation.
