Tandy heads Porsche Carrera Cup GB test at Silverstone‏

Nick Tandy narrowly set the pace in testing for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone today (Friday 14 October) ahead of the final two rounds of the championship. But with 20 drivers covered by 1.5s and a fifth of a second between the three title contenders, the stage is set for a thrilling conclusion to a fabulous season for the Carrera Cup GB.Tandy (Nationwide/Motorbase) edged to the top of the time sheets in the afternoon session as 27 cars lapped the Silverstone National circuit on a beautiful early autumn day. Just how close it will be in Sunday’s pair of races was underlined by the fact that Tandy’s best lap was only one hundredth of a second faster than Stephen Jelley (Parker with Juta), after the title contender set the pace in the morning session.Jelley’s title rivals Michael Meadows and James Sutton from SAS/Redline were right on the pace with third and fifth best times, split by Jelley’s team mate Euan Hankey. “It’s going to be very close; it always is,” said Jelley. “I’m completely up for it and it will all come down to qualifying. It’s good to have Euan up there.”Meadows, who is level with Jelley on points going into the weekend, knows that Saturday’s half-hour qualifying session will be crucial. “I need to keep pushing all the time,” said Meadows. “The top six or seven are going to be very close and we’ve just got to be as fast as we can in qualifying.” Sutton, meanwhile, is only three points behind. “I’ve just got to do the best job I can and qualifying will be mega important,” said Sutton. “This is the third time I’ve been in this position in the Carrera Cup.”Young chargers Sam Tordoff (Team Parker Racing) and Ben Hetherington (Oman Air/Redline) were strong in sixth and seventh positions and each are capable of a podium finish. Significantly, if their pace carries through into qualifying, it gives each of the title contending teams three drivers in the top seven places.Jonas Gelzinis (Juta Racing) headed Pro-Am1 with eighth fastest overall while Richard Plant (Team Parker Racing) and Kieran Vernon (Nationwide/Motorbase) packed out the top 10. Next up in Pro-Am1 were Ahmad Al Harthy (Oman Air/Redline) and Rory Butcher (Celtic Speed) and they will battle for the runner-up position in Pro-Am1 in the pair of races. A strong fourth in Pro-Am1 went to Michael Leonard (Team Parker Racing).Keith Webster (Redline Racing) scored the first strike in the battle for the ProAm2 title by heading the category in testing. Significantly, he lapped four-tenths of a second faster than his title rival George Brewster (Celtic Speed). “I really need to try and get two poles in qualifying,” said Webster. “Whatever happens, it has been a brilliant season and I’ve learnt so much.” Brewster knows that Saturday’s qualifying session is massively important. “Qualifying will be the key to the weekend and I just need to hook it up,” said Brewster. “I need to go for the points for pole and fastest lap.” Steve Parish (Motorbase Performance) and Yucel Ozbek (Redline Racing) were next up in Pro-Am2, running close to Brewster’s pace.
