for Sunday Rennsport Reunion RacesNo. 4 PNR “Rennsport Edition” Cayman S Wins Interseries Class Concours HonorsMONTEREY, Calif. (October 14, 2011) – Reigning series champion Lee Davis shined on the biggest stage yet for the Cayman Interseries by taking the pole for tomorrow’s races in qualifying Saturday at Rennsport Reunion IV at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Davis, who drives his black and red No. 33 Cayman S that carries the colors of the Advan Porsche 956s and 962s and Luna-C Clothing, made his move late in the crowded 20-minute qualifying session and eventually locked down the top spot with a lap time 1:37.959 on the 2.238-mile circuit.
“It was great, the car was fantastic,” Davis said. “We made a few little changes, and when you put sticker tires on and have a nice cool track, it makes for great conditions. I felt like we took advantage of it, but knew it was going to be difficult because there were a lot of cars out there. It was going to basically be about finding a good clean lap, and we were able to do a couple of those and post a pretty good time.”
Ironically, Davis edged Henry Davis and his No. 21 Cayman S, which carries the memorable markings of the silver Martini Porsche 917s, for the pole. Although the two drivers are not related, they will share an all-Davis front row for Sunday’s Cayman Interseries race. Davis clocked in at 1:38.876.
Third spot on the grid went to debuting Cayman Interseries driver Jack Kachadurian who continued to impress in the red and white No. 14 Cayman S in the theme of a Richard Lloyd Racing Canon Porsche 956 with a lap time of 1:39.155. Mark Sandridge, who topped Friday practice, qualified fourth at 1:39.245 in his white and red-and-yellow striped No. 49 Cayman S, which is modeled after his 1994 IMSA Champion Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR. Jim Bacus rounded out the top five in his popular purple and green No. 3 “Hippy” Martini Porsche 917LH-themed Cayman S with a lap time of 1:39.464.
Not all of the competition was on the race track on Saturday. The Cayman Interseries was also invited to compete as its own class in the Rennsport Reunion IV Concours competition. A total of six Caymans were awarded medals of excellence, with the No. 4 “Rennsport Edition” Cayman S, that was unveiled just yesterday, earning a perfect-score for class best-of-show honors.
Other competitors to earn Cayman Interseries Concours medals were Wayne Nykyforchyn (No. 11 Marlboro/Joest Racing Porsche 956), Lori Cassling (No. 23 “Pink Pig” Porsche 917/20), John Martino (No. 7 Newman/Joest Racing Porsche 962), David Gronke (No. 8 Blaupunkt/Joest Racing Porsche 962) and Kachadurian for the No. 14 Canon car.
The Concours was just another spectacular part of the Rennsport Reunion experience that has left all in the Cayman Interseries paddock impressed.
“I really didn’t know what to expect because I had never been to a Rennsport before,” Davis said. “Just looking at all of these amazing cars around here, I don’t know if there’s been a dollar figure put on the amount of great cars here, but it is great to see so many Caymans here. It’s fantastic, a lot of good cars and good drivers here.”
The Cayman Interseries played host to several families form the Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF) Saturday. The series is racing in support of the CTF this weekend, including a fundraising raffle of some special sports wear from Luna-C Clothing, a new brand being started by Davis.
“This event is already really special, especially for us with the Children’s Tumor Foundation and the promotion and the raffle that we are doing with them,” Davis said. “We are launching our Luna-C Clothing line in a month and this is a great start and promotion for that launch. It is really special to be here, and to just be invited to this event, and to have CTF here and get the pole, is just icing on the cake.”
