Tiago Monteiro took part in the last two races of the FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) this weekend on the Guia city circuit at Macau. The driver of the SEAT Leon 1.6 Liter Turbo #18 car added 4 points to his total thanks to his 8th place finish in the second race, which he had started from further back. He finishes the world championship in 6th place. In the first race, Tiago moved up from 10th to 7th, when he slid on an oil patch at the Lisbon braking, while he was attacking a competitor.
Tiago's best working hypotheses were compromised in qualifying when he missed the pole position in the second race by 9 hundredths, forcing him in the end to settle for 11th position on the starting grid. Before qualifying, Tiago had been the fastest driver in the field behind the untouchable Chevrolets, and he had decided to risk everything at race time. He quickly gained 3 places in the start of the first leg, when a patch of oil left on the asphalt by an accident caught him. "It was my mistake. The track was very dirty because of the many accidents that there had been earlier and I braked in the wrong spot," Tiago declared. The SEAT Sun-Red driver re-entered the race in last place and put on a great show, but the points were out of his reach. "I tried to make up for lost time, but a differential problem that had kept coming back all weekend complicated the task for me, especially in the slow corners."
For the second race, Tiago wanted to be careful and finish the year with a points finish. "I gained the most positions possible, but without that disillusion in qualifying, I could certainly have fought for a podium, and so I am a bit disappointed. But there is no point in moaning about it. I feel like I was always one of the fastest SEAT drivers on the track this year and that is significant progress," Tiago concluded.
