Pirelli-backed GT Cup prepares for round two at Silverstone

The second round of the GT Cup Championship will take place at the home of the British Grand Prix at the weekend, as the eight-round series moves to Silverstone (12–13 May). After an enthralling season-opener at Donington Park in Leicestershire last month, three different race winners emerged victorious. Martin Short finished second in his Pirelli-supported Mosler Super GT600 in all three races, and Short’s consistent performance has rewarded him with an early championship lead.As the championship’s official tyre supplier, Pirelli will be on hand at Silverstone to supply slick tyres in DM and DH specification as well as wet tyres in WS and WH compounds. To help cater for all the various cars on the grid, a wide range of different tyre sizes will also be available.“I hadn’t tested the Pirelli tyres before Donington and I was very pleasantly surprised with how well they worked in both wet and dry conditions,” said championship leader Short. “In the first race we had a bit of problem with the set-up but the car got better and better as the tyres warmed up. I have to say that our drive in the first race was one of the most enjoyable I’ve had, and I was full of praise for Pirelli.”Short added: “The next two races were very wet but we learned a lot about the slicks in these conditions. The Mosler is very light on the tyres, so it was just about trying to find the right set-up. The weekend was definitely a good learning experience, and we found out a lot about the Pirelli tyres – both in dry and extremely wet conditions,”Pirelli Tyre UK motorsport manager, Carl Naylor, said: “Even though conditions were incredibly difficult at the previous round in Donington, the tyres gave the drivers plenty of confidence and we were happy with the performance of both our wet tyres and dry slicks. It also marked the first time that several of the drivers had used our tyres and the overall feedback was very positive. Hopefully the weather will be kinder to the crews in Silverstone next week, and we look forward to what is expected to be another exciting round of the championship.”
