Last month saw a busy period for the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge, with participating series out almost every weekend and registered racers all trying to earn points toward the Challenge. Legends racer Lawrence Davey has enjoyed great success in his last rounds and sees him in the top spot – however just 25 points cover the top 5 making the Challenge closer than ever before!
The past few weeks have seen the Challenge standings constantly changing and last weekend saw one of the biggest leap’s - Linton Stutely from the F3 Cup jumped a massive 22 positions into 7th place after taking the maximum points on offer for the round. Linton took both race wins plus extra points for both pole positions and two fastest laps; it was this consistency that gave last year’s winner, Aaron Steele, the opportunity to race at Daytona. With four rounds left in the F3 Cup season Linton could be a potential threat to knock Lawrence off the top spot.
Mike Jordan from the Britcar Production Cup, who once led the Challenge, has slipped into 6th place after having to miss a Britcar round due to other motorsport commitments. The ex BTCC racer has however had a strong showing in the previous rounds and as well as a potential winner of the Challenge Jordan is currently in contention for the Britcar Production Cup Championship win, along with team mate Nigel Ainge who is 9th in the Challenge standings.
Joe Girling from the Dunlop Production Touring Car Trophy (PTCT) currently sits in fifth place in the Challenge standings. Girling is also in contention for the PTCT championship title and is currently 2nd overall.
Harry Cockill has shown consistency throughout the Britcar Production Cup and sits in fourth place – less than 2 points separate Harry from third placed Martin Byford from the Britcar Endurance Series (class 3). Both drivers have suffered from not being able to gain maximum points due to smaller grids but have performed outstandingly giving them a high enough point score to be able to contend for the prize drive at Daytona.
Gary Duckman is the second entrant from the Dunlop Production Touring Car Trophy (PTCT) to claim a spot in the top 5 and is currently second overall. With just over 5 points separating Duckman from Davey in first place the race to Daytona isn’t over yet!
It was the second round of the Legends Championship where Lawrence Davey really made an impact on the standings, taking the Challenge lead after a great 5 out 6 wins plus extra points for setting 2 fastest laps. Davey is no stranger to Legends racing and has been competing in both the national Legends championship and the world championships since 2001. In 2010 Lawrence became the Legends UK Champion and 2011 saw him finish third overall. 2012 sees Lawrence not only wanting to regain his title but also take the Challenge win.
“With a very good start to the season I have found myself leading the Legends Cars championship and the Sunoco GRAND-AM Challenge. Every race I set myself a target and out of 18 races I have only failed to meet my target once. That was only down to accident damage, but I still managed a top 10 finish,” commented Lawrence.
“Since the last meeting we have made some improvements to the car, so I am confident that I can keep hitting my personal targets. I am confident that I can win the Legends Cars Championship as I have an 880 point lead and also if my current form continues hopefully the Sunoco GRAND-AM Challenge.”
The next point scoring round for the Sunoco GRAND-AM 200 Challenge will be on the 7th and 8th of July with the Dutch Supercar Challenge out at Zolder.
