Porsche Carrera Cup GB Scholar Daniel Lloyd got the 2013 season off to a competitive start at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit over the weekend, 30th/31st March, with a deserved podium finish, in front of the live ITV4 cameras, during the televised second round of the campaign at the freezing cold Kent track.Bouncing back impressively from the disappointment of a non-finish in Saturday afternoons first race, the Huddersfield driver worked his way through from fifth on the grid in round two on Sunday to take an impressive top three result.Although vexed to begin the second encounter from the third row of the grid, having lapped a mere 0.1 seconds shy of pole position in an unbelievably tight qualifying session, the 21-year-old made a good getaway but remained fifth through the first turn, Paddock Hill Bend.Pressuring reigning champion Michael Meadows during the early stages, on lap seven the 2012 title winner tangled with Rory Butcher giving Daniel the chance to grab fourth. With the leading three cars running almost nose-to-tail, the Team Parker Racing driver pushed to make it a four-way fight and by lap 15 he was in a position to begin thinking about attacking Butcher.Running right in the Scotsmans wheeltracks, Daniels pressure paid off on lap 23 at Druids Hairpin when Butcher locked his brakes and the British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) Rising Star was able to complete a pass on the run into Graham Hill Bend.Rapidly closing on second placed Jonas Gelzinis during the final few laps, a potential challenge for the position unfortunately went begging when coolant deposited on the track by another car led to reduced grip, leaving Daniel to settle for third.Im really pleased with that result, reflected Daniel, Obviously we had a disaster of a start to the season yesterday, and then starting from fifth on the grid today it was always going to be hard as well. You cant really expect much at this track when you start there and its a dry race and level playing field, so to get on the podium from fifth is greatIm really happy.It was a nice clean race, I didnt make any mistakes and we had good pace throughout. I was a little bit disappointed there was coolant on the track at the end as I think I would have had a shot at getting [Jonas] Gelzinis, but it is what it is and Im still pleased with third.The disaster Daniel referred to from round one on Saturday was contact with Butcher as the duo disputed second place. In tricky conditions, with light snow showers overhead, Daniel made a superb getaway to scythe through from fourth on the grid into second.With a great start to his championship bid there for the taking, on lap six it all came undone when a challenge from Butcher on the outside into Paddock Hill Bend resulted in the pair tanglingand Daniels race ending in the gravel.It was one of those things unfortunately, he explained, [Rory] Butcher took a mega wide line to square the corner off, I stuck to my normal linethe racing linebut when we got to the middle of the corner we tapped each other and that was it, I just spun out. It wasnt what we wanted but Im happy we hit back with a good podium in race two.Donington Park National Circuit in Leicestershire will host rounds three and four of the 2013 Porsche Carrera Cup GB Championship three weeks from now, on 20th/21st April.
