Mixed Fortune for Jack Aitken in Formula Renault 2.0 NEC Debut
Jack Aitken has completed his first Formula Renault 2.0 NEC race weekend with Fortec Motorsports at the Hockenheimring in Germany. The 17-year-old, contesting his first season of European racing and only his second in single seaters, made a strong start to the weekend. Jack quickly settled in to the FR2.0/13 by Tatuus car, finding pace against a very strong 38-car field, many of whom have far greater experience than Jack, during both Free Practice sessions to set the 5th and 3rd fastest laps on the timesheets.Jack showed maturity and composure in his inaugural qualifying session on Saturday morning to claim an impressive 2nd place in Group A (qualifying is split into two groups) and a 4th position overall for the start of Race one later in the afternoon. At a cold and dry Hockenheimring, Jack lost two places at the start but was up to P5 and in touch with the leading pack when the safety car was deployed until the chequered flag.It was cold and damp on Sunday morning for the start of Race two at 09:00. All of the Fortec drivers started on Michelin slick tyres and Jack made a decent start from 6th place to defend his position on tricky track conditions. However, an incident filled race ensured that the safety car was once again sent out and whilst the cars paraded behind it for the remainder of the race, Jack suffered a clutch issue and was forced to retire with only one lap remaining (finishing P32 on the classification sheets due to completion of 75% of the race).Jack started Race three on the front row of the grid in P2 (the grid positions being determined by the Race one finish and the first six drivers' positions being reversed). He made a solid start, however tagged the back of Oliver Rowland to move down to 4th in the opening lap. Jack kept in contention with the leaders until a small error induced a spin and a drop to the back of the field. He crossed the line in a disappointing 22nd position, with many lessons learnt and his maiden weekend securely under his belt.Jack Aitken comments, I am very happy to have completed my first NEC round and get all of those mistakes out of way. The pace is there and I am satisfied with the fifth place and points from the very first race. The overall results were obviously not what I intended, and it is a real shame because we showed our potential in testing. We had good pace, so my overall results are not indicative of what I can achieve, but its onwards and upwards to testing next week and the second round at the Nrburgring. The second round of the NEC takes place at the Nrburgring on 18-20 April 2013.
