Team Icer Brakes Blido Racing, competing in the Hungary 12 hours with a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup teaming with SpeedLover under Team Icer Brakes banner, was forced to retire after two hours into the race when its car suffered terminal gearbox problems.
Team Icer Brakes, the Spanish team taking part in the Hungary 12 hours after the joint venture between Blido Racing and Belgiums SpeedLover, had to retire after two hours. The Porsche 997 GT3 Cup fielded by the Spanish-Belgian team had serious gearbox problems after two hours when the team was fighting for the overall lead with the final winners.
The driver line-up consisting of Jess Dez Villarroel from Spain and Belgiums Jean-Michel Gerome and Frances Philippe Richard, was in top-places since the first practice sessions at the Hungarian track. The practice session was in wet conditions and Team Icer Brakes finished in 4th and then, in qualifying, almost identical bad weather. Dez Villarroel, thanks to his previous experience in races like Le Mans, Spa or Daytona was chosen by the team to qualify the car. The Spaniard driver completed a very good qualifying session with 5th fastest time and 1st in the 997 class posting a lap of 2:19.663.
The race was started on Saturday at 8.00 and the rain visited the circuit once again. Team Icer Brakes managed to climb to 2nd place overall and also leading the Porsche class. Unfortunately after completing fifty laps the Porsche 997 GT3 Cup had the mechanical issue previously mentioned and the retirement was the single option for the team.
It was a shame because our race pace was quite good. Actually we were 2nd overall and leading our class, but the gearbox problems were a decisive factor to retire. In addition it happened when I was ready to start my first stint, but racing is just like that. Anyway were quite happy with our performance on the track while our car lasted and, personally, my pole position here in the 997 class is going to be another good memory in my career, Dez Villarroel explained.
