EDINBURGH have made progress in the Premier League Knockout Cup after a successful defence of their first-leg advantage at Leicester. The Monarchs did find themselves under some pressure despite taking a 27-point lead to the East Midlands, but a strong second half of the meeting saw them limit the home side to a 46-44 win on the night.Edinburgh skipper Derek Sneddon said: We were worried, every time I looked Leicester were getting a 5-1. But we turned it around in the end.Leicester co-promoter Alan Jones added: It was a big ask to rescue the tie, and after Heat 10 when we were 14 points ahead and just 13 behind on aggregate there was a possibility of making further inroads. But all credit to Edinburgh who came back with a late rally and to such an extent that we did well to hang on to a home win.(SPEEDWAY 2)

BERWICK boss Ian Rae blamed poor starting for the Bandits home Knockout Cup defeat to Redcarleaving them an uphill battle ahead of Thursdays second leg.The Bears won 46-44 at Shielfield Park with reserve Micky Dyer scoring a sensational paid-16, including a Heat 15 win over the previously unbeaten Sebastian Alden.Rae said: We were left woefully weak at the gate too many times and despite some cracking races from Seb Alden the good stuff was too far apart against a team like Redcar who really wanted the win and gated so well to get the points. They deserved their win, but now we have to go there on Thursday and do the same - and better!

NEWCASTLE manager George English says the Diamonds could well have taken more than one point from Workington on Saturday following a narrow defeat at Derwent Park. The visitors clawed their way back from a ten-point deficit in the League Cup match and drew level in Heat 13, only for Richard Lawson and Rusty Harrison to seal a 47-43 home win with a 5-1 in the last race.English said: The was a match we could have and really should have won, but the forces that be were not on our side at the end and Workington took the victory. At least we took one League Cup point which is better then nothing, but not what we should be taking back to the East Coast. Lewis Kerr really is showing what he is capable of and it looked like we've got ourselves another good 'un.
