SHEFFIELD pulled off an astonishing comeback to open their Premier League campaign with a 47-46 home win over Workington. The Tigers trailed 8-22 after five races and were still eleven-down beyond the halfway stagebut a series of race advantages were completed by a dramatic 5-1 in Heat 15 from Simon Stead and Richard Hall, who got the better of Comets duo Richard Lawson and Kyle Howarth in spectacular fashion.Hall said: Me and Simon had a chat before Heat 15 and I told him to just go if he made the start because I was confident Id be able to pass them.I know my way around here and know which lines work, I knew if I had a clear run I could do it and I was just chuffed we could get the 5-1. We started so badly but the character was amazing, everyone chipped in and to come from 14-down to win, thats pretty special.(SPEEDWAY 2)
BERWICK boss Ian Rae insists the Knockout Cup tie with Redcar was lost at home last weekend, despite his side engineering a winning position in the second leg.The Bandits raced into a 28-13 lead at the South Tees Motorsports Park on Thursday but were pegged back by a resilient home side, who eventually snatched a 45-44 win on the night for a three-point aggregate success.Rae said: I though we had it well in our control after Heat 7, but again their Micky Dyer hammered us good and proper and his 31+2 over the two legs were the nails in our coffin without doubt. We really lost it on Saturday as we should never have had to try and come back from Heat 1, as tonight overall we didn't do too badly.(SPEEDWAY 3)
LEICESTER will open their Premier League campaign against Redcar on Saturday without the services of Lasse Bjerre. The Danish star is competing in an event in his home country to determine their qualifiers for the World Under-21 Championship, and the Lions must therefore use the rider-replacement facility.Co-promoter Alan Jones said: As it is an official fixture covered by an agreement between the Danish Motor Union and the British Speedway Promoters Association we have no option but to allow Lasse to miss our match against Redcar. It is not ideal to have a gap in our team and means that all remaining six riders need to be scoring well to cover for Lasses absence.
