SPEEDWAY News and Fixtures
(SPEEDWAY 1)POOLE and Kings Lynn have received contrasting injury updates ahead of their Elite League clash at Wimborne Road on Good Friday. The Pirates have been boosted by the news that new signing Przemyslaw Pawlicki came through a weekend practice session after his crash in Germany on Mondaybut the Stars will be without skipper Mads Korneliussen for some time after he suffered a broken shoulder-blade and fractured vertebrae in Fridays Danish Final, with Edward Kennett booked to guest in Dorset.Poole promoter Matt Ford said: Shamek rang me on Saturday and confirmed that everything had gone well and as much as he was looking forward to his Polish league fixture for Leszno at Rzeszow on Sunday, he was even more excited about his Poole debut. After all the problems we have had, I am really looking forward to seeing how our new-shaped side works on Monday.(SPEEDWAY 2)PREMIER League leaders Leicester were given a huge scare by bottom club Plymouth before salvaging a 46-44 win on Saturday. The Devils, with guest Craig Cook scoring a 15-point maximum, led virtually throughout the meeting as they dominated the race wins, only for a 5-1 to the Lions in Heat 14 to put the home side ahead with a 3-3 from Kevin Doolan and Lasse Bjerre in the finale securing their narrow victory.Leicester co-promoter Alan Jones said: That was too close for comfort and full marks to the Plymouth team who belied their lowly league position.Four heat winners for us tells its own story of how hard the meeting was but we kept faith that it would come right and perhaps the Devils will feel like we picked their pockets at the very end.(SPEEDWAY 3)WORKINGTON raced to their biggest win of the season so far - defeating Glasgow 65-27 at Derwent Park despite having a team made up of only three of their own riders and three guests.Their choices at reserve proved to be inspired with Micky Dyer (15-point maximum) and Lewis Kerr (10+4) both in fine form, whilst regular Comet Rusty Harrison (13+2) was also unbeaten.Workington boss Tony Jackson said: It was a terrific effort by everyone to reach that points total and all the guests came in and did a great job for us. You always have a worry when you have a rider missing, but we had four missing tonight and the guests gave it everything on our behalf. We now have two weeks until our next team match when hopefully both Tero Aarnio and Chris Mills are fit to return following their injuries and we wont need any guests.(SPEEDWAY 4)NICK Morris is set to return from a broken collarbone in Somersets trip to Scunthorpe on Bank Holiday Monday.Morris, ironically a member of the Scorpions side who narrowly defeated the Rebels in last years Premier League Grand Final, has been sidelined since crashing in a guest appearance for Berwick earlier in the month.Somerset boss Garry May said: It is great news that Nick is now recovered in order to return to the side for Mondays match. We wanted him to be 100 per cent ready before his return, there was no point in rushing that for Monday only for him to aggravate things and find himself sidelined once again. Some might look upon this as our chance to exact revenge on Scunthorpe for our defeat at their hands in last years Play-Off Final, but that is now history and Im more focussed on us looking to come away from their place with some league points to our name and then collecting all three match points from Wednesdays return fixture at the Oaktree Arena.(SPEEDWAY 5)KYLE Hughes scored a 12-point maximum despite illness as Stoke gained their first win of the season with a 55-40 National Trophy success over Mildenhall at Loomer Road.Hughes four-ride unbeaten show was backed up by Luke Priest (12+2) and Ben Reade (10+1), with the Potters also scoring well at reserve to give encouragement to boss Malcolm Vasey. He said: We really got stuck in from the start, the team looked far better balanced and I think we are now beginning to go places. Were all really pleased with the result.Kyle has been ill all day and asked to be excused from Heat 15 with all three points in the bag or he would have come out for that race, and it was good to be in the knowledge we had the points secure against such a quality side as Mildenhall and its good to feel like that.(FIXTURES)SUNDAY MAY 26:PREMIER LEAGUE: Newcastle v Scunthorpe 6.30LEAGUE CUP: Glasgow v Edinburgh 3pm, Rye House v Plymouth 4pmNATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 2nd leg: Mildenhall v Coventry 4.30NATIONAL TROPHY: Buxton v Kent 3pmMONDAY MAY 27:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Coventry v Peterborough 7.30, Peterborough v Coventry 1pm, Poole v Kings Lynn 7.30, Wolverhampton v Birmingham 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE: Scunthorpe v Somerset 3pmNATIONAL TROPHY: Kent v Mildenhall 3pmCHALLENGE: Scunthorpe Saints Select v Milton Keynes (follows PL fixture)TUESDAY MAY 28:NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP 1st leg: Dudley v Buxton 7.30, Isle of Wight v Kent 7pmWEDNESDAY MAY 29:SKY SPORTS ELITE LEAGUE: Kings Lynn v Peterborough 7.30PREMIER LEAGUE: Somerset v Scunthorpe 7.30
