Masters grids bulging for Silverstone Classic

The four Masters Historic Racing grids for next months Silverstone Classic are set to be full with a tremendous display of support from the historic racing organisers competitors. With six weeks still to go before the annual historic racing festival, Masters can proudly boast excellent grids for three of its races and a very healthy Formula One entry as well. The fullest grid will be for the Gentlemen Drivers Pre-66 GT Cars where over 80 entries were received and have been reduced to a 58-car grid with reserves. The mouth-watering entry list includes 10 AC Cobras, including the Cobra Daytona Coupe, 10 Jaguar E-types, four Porsche 911s, five TVRs and an invitation entry for the rare Australian-built Milano. The race will run for the Piper Heidsieck International Trophy for Classic GT Cars in association with Chopard.Touring Car fans wont be disappointed as 48 cars are presently on the entry list for the Masters Pre-66 Touring Car race, which pits American V8 muscle versus the Rest of the World. In an entry headed by Ford Mustangs, Ford Falcon Sprints and the Mercury Comet Cyclone of Kiwi Roger Wills, the smaller Lotus Cortinas, BMW 1800s and Mini Coopers will all be out for glory. Its not just the cars that are of interest: the drivers come from all walks of life including television chef James Martin and crime novelist Peter James.A whopping 53 entries have been received for the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship, the first time the FIA-badged series will have run at the Silverstone Classic. Ferrari fans can drool over the operatic-sounding 512M of Paul Knapfield, while he popular Lola T70 is numerically strong, with 10 Mk3Bs on the entry list including one for Jason Wright and former sports car and F1 hero Arturo Merzario who will make a welcome return to Silverstone. He will go up against Simon Hadfield who was involved in the design of Merzarios ill-fated Formula 1 car in the 1970s. With a maximum of 50 cars permitted to start this race, Masters is delighted to be bringing another full grid. The FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship sits close to 30 entries so far but more are expected after this weekends races at Dijon. The lure of the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit always generates a big entry and Masters is confident that more drivers will commit once they have had a trouble-free weekend in France.Masters Historic Racing Event Manager Rachel Bailey said: We are overwhelmed by the support for our Silverstone races. It underlines the importance of picking the right venues and the right events at which to race in a crowded historic racing marketplace and once again the Silverstone Classic and the Masters ethos of looking after competitors have attracted drivers in enormous numbers. We still have a few spaces left on the Pre-66 Touring Car grids but that is almost full, and we are sure that if people have a trouble-free run at Dijon the FIA Masters Formula One Championship will grow to be our biggest grid of 2013 so far.The Silverstone Classic runs at Silverstone on July 26th28th.
