The MWR Kawasaki team endured mixed fortunes at Snetterton today with the joy of Harry Hartley taking his second successive points scoring finish in the Pirelli National Superstock 600 Championship offset by the disappointment of James Egan being knocked off on just the fourth lap of the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Championship race.
16-year-old Hartley was back in action aboard the Kawasaki ZX-6R having missed the previous round at Knockhill and after qualifying in a solid 18th place he was able to make good progress throughout the race. A good start saw him gain a couple of places on the first lap although the hot track conditions made the going tough. The Burnley rider rode a sensible race and he was duly rewarded with his best result of the season in 13th place and three more championship points.
For South African Egan, qualifying proved to be hard work and he found himself back in 31st place but changes to the bike saw him lap quicker in morning warm-up and a lot more confident for the race. A superb start saw him jump up to 18th place by the end of the first lap and he remained inside the top 20 until the fourth lap when he was knocked off by another rider bringing his race to an abrupt end.
Harry Hartley: "After missing the last round, it was good to be racing again although it did take me a couple of sessions to get back into the groove. The weather made for a very hot race and the grip from the back tyre had reduced by half distance so I was sliding around quite a lot. We'd made a few changes to the gearing of the bike, also altering the wheelbase, and I was struggling to get the drive onto the straights but I was pleased with my race and it's nice to finish in the points again."
James Egan: "The changes we made after qualifying completely changed the bike and I knew in morning warm-up that we'd gone in the right direction as I felt so much happier on the bike. I made a great start to the race and felt comfortable with the pace I was running so much so that I felt confident of moving forward during the race. Sadly, the rider behind me kept diving up the inside and forcing me wide but when I defended the line he still did it and knocked me off. It's very irritating as I felt a good result was on the cards today but on the plus side we've taken the right path with the set-up of the bike and I'm confident we can make good progress from here onwards."
Mark Webster, Team Owner: "It could have been a really good weekend for us with two good results from both of our riders but sadly James getting knocked off made it only half a good weekend! We had a really encouraging result with Harry and not only was it good to have him back but also good to see him moving forward all the time and making good progress. He knows all the circuits that are coming up so we're hopeful of that progress continuing and scoring even more points.
"The drastic changes we made to James' bike clearly worked and whilst they were a bit of a gamble it was obvious they were the right ones as he was running well inside the top 20. He was looking very strong so it's a real shame he got taken off by another rider. We've got two test days planned now for Silverstone and Brands Hatch so the boys will get plenty of track time and with the encouraging pace they've both shown, we're all looking forward to the next round."
The next round of the Pirelli National Superstock 600 and 1000 Championships take place at Brands Hatch over the weekend of 19/21 July. For further information, please visit www.mwrkawasaki.co.uk or www.britishsuperbike.com.
