The Idaq Motorsport team had mixed fortunes at round six of the Metzeler National Superstock 1000 Championship at the Snetterton 300 Circuit this weekend. James East scored his best result of the season so far with sixth place, Paul Curran 24th and Pete Ward crashed out on the penultimate lap.
James East was running really well all weekend and was up to third place in the free practice session on Friday morning. He dropped back to sixth in combined qualifying but set his best qualifying position of the season so far. He was eager to get a good result in the race, he struggled on the opening lap and was sitting in eighth after lap one. He was soon locked in a tight battle and fought hard in the extremely hot conditions to work his way back to sixth place and 14th place in the overall Championship standings.
James East - "That was a good race, I was struggling all weekend to find the set up that I needed and despite good times over the weekend I think I could have been a little higher up the grid. I got a good start but it all got very messy into the hairpin and that's where I lost some positions.
The safety car helped re-group everyone and this gave me more of a chance to stick with the front runners. The tyre was getting so hot towards the end of the race that I didn't want to risk pushing too hard and crashing out like I'd seen several riders do on the closing laps. I'm not sure if the bike was getting too hot in the closing stages but the power out of the corners wasn't as good as at the start. All in all it was a really good race, I managed to score points again which was my main aim this season and to continue to improve. I'm really looking forward to Brands GP as it's one of my favourite circuits and hope at some point soon I can start pushing for a podium place."
Paul Curran improved on his times in each session and took off nearly a second from free practice to second qualifying which placed him in 26th for the race. He worked hard and through the pain of a tooth abscess to finish in 24th position.
Paul Curran - "It's been a difficult weekend this weekend and I just wasn't able to find a set up that worked well for me here at Snetterton. I'm not sure why as we'd tested here but I just couldn't gel with the track and cut my time down as much as I would have liked too. It's hard starting from that position as the first hairpin and forty riders going for the same line makes it very difficult to keep out of trouble and not crash. I rode hard during the race but the front pack made a break from us, we have a few things to test and try before we go to Brands in a few weeks."
Peter Ward had a mixed weekend at Snetterton and despite being one of the few unable to improve his times between the two qualifying sessions he ended up starting from 17th place on the grid. He was fortunate to get a fantastic start and was up to 12th after the opening lap, locked in a tight battle he lost some places in the closing laps and then crashed out heavily into the last corner of the penultimate lap.
Peter Ward - "That was a really tough weekend for me, I struggled throughout qualifying trying to change the bike to find a good set up and nothing seemed to work so I ended up in a low qualifying position. The boys made some changes overnight and the bike felt really good in warm up and I was keen to get racing. I got a great start and managed to avoid all the chaos of lap one into the first few tight corners. My pace was good and I was keen for a top ten finish but I started having a few bike problems in the final laps and lost some places then before I knew it I crashed out pretty heavily at the final corner. I'm just sorry to the Idaq team as no one likes crashing and I know how hard they had worked over the weekend. Hopefully things will change for Brands and I can be back up there again."
Team Principal Mark Roebuck - "All in all this weekend has been a good one for us. The crash on the last lap for Pete was a shame but James' 6th place is a fantastic result against 52 entrants. Unfortunately Paul had some health issues so was not up to speed but should be recovered by Brands Hatch."
