Giddings just misses Maiden Ginetta Challenge Win At Spa

Jake Giddings secured his, and Total Control Racings, second Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge podium in as many events on Saturday, 13th July, during the categorys sole overseas visit of the season to Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. In truth, the Wednesbury team could have been celebrating its first win of 2013 in the championship during the third of the weekends encounters with Giddingswho only made his competitive debut in the Ginetta GT5 Challenge last monthjust 0.8 seconds shy of victory in round 15.Giddings was also on course for a podium during race one, round 13, but a heavy excursion into the tyre barriers from third place, caused by oil deposited from the leaders Ginetta G40, cost the Wisbech racer an almost certain rostrum visit. With the TCR mechanics doing a fantastic job to repair Giddings car for the subsequent encounters, he charged to a strong fourth place finish in round 14 before capping off his weekend superbly with a tremendous second place in the final outing. After comfortably making his way into the podium placings, the TCR driver deposed David Pittard for second during the closing laps and set off after leader Will Burns. Reeling in his rival, Giddings just fell short on the final lap by a mere 0.8 secondshaving been lapping half a second faster. As well as claiming a deserved podium, he also bagged the fastest lap of the race by setting a new lap record.Rookie team-mate Callum Pointon produced three impressively strong and competitive drives at the wheel of his G40, despite some misfortune along the way on his maiden outing at the world-famous Belgian track.

Climbing as high as sixth place in round 13, the youngster from Cheddleton delivered a great showing but an unfortunate excursion resulted in flat-spotted Michelin tyres which compromised his grip and, therefore, pace as he slipped back to ninth position.Taking an improved seventh place result in round 14, even though running on old rubber, Pointon did well to recover from a sluggish start to get back into the upper order. In the final encounter, round 15, the first year car racer lost out again at the start but carved his way through into the top eight prior to a tangle with a rival which dropped Pointon back to 10th position. Both drivers had great pace this weekend, they really impressed us and did a fantastic job, said team principal Lee Brookes, Spa isnt an easy circuit, its a very long lap in a Ginetta G40 and there are plenty of really challenging corners which can catch the best drivers out. Were delighted with the performances Jake and Callum delivered this weekend and, with a bit more luck, we could have had a win and certainly more podiums. Theyre both going in the right direction, no doubt about it.Brands Hatch Grand Prix Circuit in Kent will host rounds 16, 17 and 18 of the Protyre Motorsport Ginetta GT5 Challenge four weeks from now on 10th/11th August.
