It was a case of one step forward, two steps back for ADD Motorsports driver Mitchell Gilbert after a frustrating weekend at Norisring.
The 18-year-old felt he had turned a corner after securing his highest position in the championships during his previous outing at the Red Bull Ring. But steering problems during his practice rounds left him with too much to do in qualifying and at the back of the grid in the races. However, the Twickenham racer vowed to keep putting in the work until he finds the form that made him such a force to be reckoned with last season.
He said: There was a problem with the steering rack in the first practice and it meant I missed most of the second practice as well.It was a strange track with a long straight and a tight hairpin and not having that practice time really set me back.
Qualifying really determines your entire weekend, so its frustrating these things keep happening.
Mitchell finished 20th, 21st and 23rd in his three qualifying sessions, but Race 1 was over by the second lap when someone crashed into the back of him. It left the Australian low on confidence for his next two races where he finished 22nd and 17th respectively. He said: Having someone hit me from behind was really demoralizing to be honest, but thats what happens when youre at the back of the grid.It left me low on confidence for the next two races although the third race was slightly better.
It was easy to crash and I could have done with more lap time early on.Its good to learn how to deal with these set-backs mentally, but it doesnt make it easier, I was expecting a good weekend after some fast times in testing.
Mitchell has some more testing before moving on to Nurburgring in August for the next round. He added: I have come into these championships believing I can race at the front. It hasnt happened yet, but I will keep trying my best to turn it around. We have to get to the front, I believe I can, and its still my aim to get to that level.
