Jack Barlow climbed into second place in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship standings at Snetterton 300 Circuit on Sunday, 8th September, off the back of claiming the third race win of his rookie year in cars – SWR’s fifth victory of the campaign – during a dramatic 20th round of the season. After securing the ‘reverse grid’ pole position for the second of the weekend’s races at the Norfolk track by finishing in eighth position in round 19 on Saturday, 7th September, the Hastings teenager made the most of the top spot on the grid to lead away at the start.Soaking up intense pressure, Barlow didn’t have any time to relax but the SWR driver didn’t put a wheel wrong either. On lap eight, though, an attack from Seb Morris at Montreal Hairpin relegated the first year single-seater racer to second place.Determined to wrest the position back, Barlow remained in Morris’ wheeltracks to the chequered flag on lap 10 where just 0.472 seconds was the difference. Post-race, however, Morris was excluded due to a technical infringement relating to the rear wing on his car – giving Barlow the win.Morris’ removal from the final classification actually made it a double podium success for Chipping Norton’s SWR with Matty Graham moving up from fourth place into the top three, taking his podium tally for the season to six.Beginning the race in fourth position, the Edmundbyers youngster was nudged back to fifth initially with Jake Dalton applying significant pressure during the early going. As the race entered its second half, Graham set about mounting a challenge for fourth on Brazilian racer Gustavo Lima and on the penultimate lap he managed to succeed in taking the place.Adding to the celebratory mood after Sunday morning’s encounter was a season-best top 12 finish for Chinese driver Zou Sirui. Lining up on the ninth row of the grid, Sirui climbed into 16th position by lap three and was up into an F4 career-best equaling 14th place by the start of lap six. He then moved into 13th position on the final lap before being elevated into 12th following Morris’ exclusion.“It’s been a strong weekend overall, another win for Jack and another podium for Matty plus a good bag of points for the pair of them”, said SWR’s Commercial Manager Mick Gomme, “It was typical Snetterton really, overtaking is always tough but they both did a really good job and took some solid results ahead of the final rounds. It was good to see Zou take a season’s best in race two as well.”For round 19 on Saturday afternoon, Barlow qualified fifth fastest – just 0.4 seconds shy of the front row of the grid – while Graham posted the eighth fastest time and Sirui lined-up in 17th position for the first of the weekend’s trio of races. Unfortunately for the Chinese driver, though, an opening lap incident brought an all-too-early end to his involvement in the race.Barlow maintained fifth off the start while Graham climbed into seventh position but on lap two the lead SWR car was elbowed back to seventh position. More frustration followed for Barlow on the third tour when he was bundled down to ninth place.Graham pressed on in sixth position and closed to within just half a second of the top five by lap seven before moving into fifth on the final lap. Barlow, meanwhile, ended the encounter in ninth but inherited eighth post-race when Matt Mason was excluded from the results. In the final race of the weekend, round 21 on Sunday, Graham was the best of the SWR trio after climbing through from eighth on the grid into the top six to retain fourth place in the championship standings. Barlow had to be satisfied with a tough 12th place finish, albeit a vital points score, after a very challenging race and Sirui ended the encounter in 18th position.“All in all we are quite pleased”, added Gomme, “It wasn’t the most straightforward of weekends but we’ve come away with some more trophies and, more importantly, good points towards the championship.“Jack and Matty are both in a strong position in the championship where any of the top six can still win it. It’s been a very strong first season for the team and we’re determined to end it on a high with more podiums at Donington in three weeks.”Leicestershire’s Donington Park Grand Prix Circuit will host the final event of the inaugural BRDC Formula 4 season on 28th/29th September.
