Tony Jardine and his gold medallist partner are well on their way to competing inWales Rally GB This weekend has seen Sky Sports News' F1 analyst Tony Jardine and his brand new co-driver, Olympic Skeleton champion Amy Williams MBE, complete their first ever rally as a duo. Amy having started this weekend as a complete co-driving novice has showed that she has the talent to take herself and Tony Jardine all the way to Wales Rally GB in November (14-17), by finishing first in class.Friday saw the launch of their campaign in which Amy has to complete at least three national rallies to make it to the finale of the FIA World Rally Championship. This weekend, at the Merrick Stages Rally, which is a round of the MSA Scottish Rally Championship, she completed the first of these and has proved that she is well on her way to international co-driving glory.Williams knows how to cope under pressure when she achieved Olympic Gold in the Skeleton at the 2010 Winter Games. On the two disciplines she said: “There are similarities and parallels (between the two) and you are always trying to find the fastest way around a corner, so that’s very similar to the skeleton. There are pressures in the car, which are very different to the pressures I feel on the skeleton, but ultimately you’re trying to read track notes, learn a track and get around as fast as possible.”The rally began in Dumfries, Scotland, with the 58 competitors ready and raring to go. Jardine and Williams held their own and managed to get off to a steady start, their vital first stage was completed in a time of 10 minutes and 40 seconds. The rest of the day saw their partnership grow and flourish, the third and fourth stages being beautifully executed. Williams found her co-driving flow and Jardine tuned into it. The duo were advised and guided by Daniel Barritt, one of Britain’s leading co-drivers in the WRC. The co-driving expert has spent his time working with Amy and passing on his extensive knowledge.Regarding their ultimate goal of competing in Wales Rally GB, Jardine said: “We want to finish and finish well; I’d like to finish in the top 30 if we could. It’s a long road ahead, a long road to Wales but with all the training and people like Daniel Barritt behind us, we intend to make it."With such a strong team behind them and a positive start to the campaign, will Amy be making a career for herself in the rally world? “If I enjoy it and I end up being good enough at it, who knows. The main thing is to get to Wales Rally GB then we’ll see what happens.”The next event for Jardine and Williams will be Rally Yorkshire (27 - 28 September), the penultimate round of the MSA British Rally Championship. The ProSpeed rally team excelled in their support and the key sponsors were PlayStation, Gran Turismo6, MIS Motorsport, Sky Bet and Kumho.
